Hi all

i am so thankful to have came across this group, first of all thanks for letting me be a part of your group and look forward to speaking to you all. A bit of background I had colitis from 2011 following a car crash and in 2019 got an ileostomy performed and my large colon removed. 3 weeks ago I went through robotic surgery to create my J Pouch and pieced together straight away, I spent a few days in hospital and then got home.

since getting home I am having a lot of memories of colitis, urgency, loose stools, leaking etc, I have since found out today that my area do not have a pouch nurse/specialist apart from my surgeon (who is obviously a very busy guy) so not really getting a lot of help or support from the hospital

I have been reading the various topics and found a lot of information from them.

I am taking immodium daily just now, 2 in the morning and then 2 around 2 pm 1 before dinner and 2 before bed this seems to be helping a lot but I know this is not good to control long term, I have order fibre supplement powder and wondering if this is recommended to try as an alternative to the immodium or is this to be used in conjunction with immodium

BM’s are around 8-10 per day and once or twice during the night. I know I am still very early days and trying to stay positive and remind myself it isn’t colitis and it will get better. The issue is I have went from a very good ileostomy to feeling like pre 2019 but I know things will get better

another question I had was sometimes it feels like there is a pressure at my rear end and need to rush to the toilet would this suggest inflammation or is this just my body getting used to the pouch?

any advice for coping and tips would be greatly appreciated

I'm sure it will get better. It just takes time. I use a powder daily,  called Intestamine,  which has Curcumin, Aloe Vera &

  • Slippery elm bark is traditionally used in western herbal medicine (WHM) that soothes irritated tissues, helps to decrease symptoms of mild gastritis and helps to decrease mild gastrointestinal tract inflammation.
  • Mastic gum relieves symptoms of dyspepsia, gastrointestinal pain and heartburn
  • Give it a try!

@S_Watt, the BMs and pressure sound normal for the early days of a new j-pouch.

If you search the forum, you will find lots of info on Imodium. I think everyone tends to be different and it can take a little while to find what works.

Another popular option is psyllium husk. I personally find only the fine powder helps, but again if you search the forum you will find the various ways people find it helpful (or not).

In some countries, you can seek help from a pouch nurse from another hospital if there is not one at the hospital where you had your surgery.

That is very cool that you had robotic surgery. Was that the surgery option they call TAMIS?

I had robotic surgery as well. Robotic surgery tends to make less mistakes than Human doing the J-pouch surgery lol
