Hey everyone! I’m super new here, and I just had my ileostomy takedown 8 days ago. I’m curious about everyone’s diet in the beginning of their j-pouch journey, and I’m still struggling with my appetite. Right now I’m mostly sticking to the bland rice, bread potato diet my doctor recommended. What are some staples in your diet?

I dont know about diet yet. My takedown got postponed because of this covid crap. Im nervous though. How do you feel?
Peanut butter, eggs, chicken. Try to get protein. Good luck! Hope your recovery is going well.
I’m so sorry your takedown was postponed!!! I honestly feel so much better than I ever did with the ostomy! I really hope you get to have yours taken down soon!
Thank you!! I’m starting to add more eggs, but I can’t decide if my stomach is liking it or not!
I would start with small frequent meals. You’re still healing and diet will change as you progress. Applesauce, cream of wheat, fruit smoothies , chicken breast without the skin. I would stay away from any fried foods, spicy, acidic foods ( orange juice, tomatoes ) carbonated drinks , any raw vegetables. I hope this helps you and I have lived with a j-pouch for quite a while. I still have great days and terrible days. It’s been hit or miss with diet. But you learn as you go. Good luck to you 💐💐😊
I’m convinced if I ate a plant based diet when I had my UC I couldn’t have avoided surgery and most likely reversed my disease. When you eat fruits and vegetables it scrapes the walls of your pouch intestines and gives it the cleanliness to heal itself.
JL88, there isn’t a shred of evidence to support this belief. I am not arguing against a plant-based diet, but it definitely does not reliably cure or treat UC.
Thank you all for your help!
There are 2 avenues of thought...firstly you are on your 'post-op diet' which will last until you and your body are ready to adventure further...For now, listen to your body...it is not hungry? Fine, do not force it...try chicken noodle soup...it is both hydrating, replaces the salts that you lose and gives you a bit of carb and protein (especially the homemade kind).
As time goes by you can test 1-2 tbls of new foods...I would suggest trying them on their own and not mixed into anything at first to see how they react.
I have a k pouch so my exit is different but my pouch is essentially the same so you need to be kind to it and think about what you want as a result.
A thicker output (what most people want): white carbs like bread, potatoes and rice...toast (even wholegrain), pita and bagels all help.
Less thick? Try a protein meal...chicken or eggs...they do not bulk things up so much.
If you wish to integrate vegetables into your diet, without the danger of being in the bathroom all day and night, try making vegetable purées mixed with mashed potatoes...I mixed green beans and potatoes, squash and potatoes, sweet potato, carrots & potatoes...you get the idea...you can start out with 4 parts potato and 1 part green veggies and work your way up to a balance that works for YOU.
Fruits can be complicated in the beginning...the fructose in them can liquify your output so take it slowly...for now, applesauce is good in moderation. Other fruit compotes may make your ouput more urgent.
Dark chocolate is good in moderation because it contains a lot of magnesium and is lower in sugar...red licorice is good too...it thickens things out but beware of the color...you may freak out when it comes back out...red!
Keep a food diary to see what does and doesn't work for you.
Good luck...and remember that this is a very long journey and not just a sprint...So take it slowly

Are there any patients out there that were 100% plant based for at least 6months before their surgery? Please weigh in.
Thank you for your input Sharon!!

Why don't you try creating a separate post with that title...you will probably get more responses...
