Had takedown a week (4/12) ago after 4 weeks of complications with my ileostoma (had obstruction due to scar tissues). My pouch was created 2/7.

I am having ~20 toilet visits a day now and my below burns real bad. Taking ibuprofen, paracetamol/Tylenol and using lidocaine cream locally but that does not do enough. Also started loperamide (6x 2 mg) to slow stuff down and psyllium husks

Any tips to improve the situation down below?

also would like to understand when I can expect some progress on the frequency…

TIME will be your best friend…..get a bidet… calmoseptine helps the burn …I used baby wipes every time…

things will get better over time but will take longer than you want. For me the burn was there for the first year but eventually tapered down to the point that I now use no creams or even baby wipes….

you just started a long journey and your new system will take time to adjust to not having a colon. I put lemon juice in my water and consumed pumpkin and that also helped with the burn.

hang in there….ask any and all questions as this group is very knowledgeable and compassionate to the wonderful world of pouching!!……

it gets better, but may take a while.

The bidet is such a life-saver.  The surgeons should give prescriptions for them at discharge. Seriously - quite inexpensive and easily installed.  Wish I had done it sooner.

I used a portable bidet before installing one. Definitely a necessity during the burning phase. It's a plastic bottle with a neck designed to deliver water where you need it.

I also found using an alcohol-free witch hazel on softest toilet paper worked very well to cleanse and soothe before applying calmoseptine - regularly.

I didn't use, but others here have recommended sitz baths.

Again - it will get better!

I had the same burning/frequency for the first 6 months. Everyone told me give it time, which is exactly what I did not want to hear with fire shooting out of my butt.

I am surprised that the Imodium 6x/daily has not had an effect on this. I take 3 per day and more than that will constipate me.

One more thing you can ask your doctor for is Questran which is Cholestyramine. It comes in a powder. It’s used off label for this situation. You have to be careful as it will also absorb medicines and can severely constipate. When I used it early on it worked and gave me some relief.

You guys are wonderful!
many great stuff I can follow up on ❤️

@New577 I am still trying to find the right dosage and coming fresh from surgery my intestines are in overdrive. I’ll check Questran, sounds like something that makes sense. Thanks!

@AMB, @Ryan138 a bidet sounds good, taking 20 showers a days as alternative considered

@Scott F don’t have much control yet… going for fysio therapie tomorrow to train some mussels is never heart of before. Hope that helps. I’ll get some cream later today, seems Vaseline is not the right stuff

thanks all!
