I have recently been looking into taking oral iron supplements again but i'm really worried about the constipation. I am currently getting iron infusions every 4 weeks but obviously the pills would be more convenient.

I have in the past taken many different kinds that were supposed to be gentle on and I always ended up having to stop taking them. I find a lot of medications make me constipated, so I have to be very careful. In my recent search for a prenatal without iron I found that some of them contain iron in the form of iron bisclygonate which is an amino acid chelate. I had never seen this type before.

I have looked into it and read that this form is very gentle. But I have taken iron supplements that were supposed to be gentle enough for a 2 year old with no success. I'm currently taking a prenatal without iron in it but if I am to get pregnant I might try to add additional iron. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this type of iron, or any other form of gentle iron that might be helpful? I will be seeing a new GI in June and I won'the be taking anything without talking to him first but I'm curious about others experiences.

Thanks!

I finally took my son to a hematologist. He said low iron numbers do not matter, only your hemoglobin and MCV . Also some people cannot absorb iron orally so it might be worth doing a test to see if you can. He also suggested liquid iron - NOT Taken daily because otherwise your liver will store too much iron. Further there is some evidence that oral iron can have negative impacts , especially for those with IBD.

Thanks for the reply. Both my iron stores and my hemoglobin are low. I should have been more specific, I have iron deficiency anemia.  I had no idea there was a test for absorption I'm going to add that to my list of things to ask the doctor. I've never been to a hematologist, although I've asked my GI and GP, they both said I didn't need to. I have tried liquid iron, 2 different kinds, but I took it daily, it might be worth a shot to try again but not taking it daily. How often did the doctor siggest?
