Hi All... I was at the hospital yesterday for my third iron infusion in 20yrs. It had been over 5 yrs since my last iron (infed) infusion. Packed my kindle and a couple of magazines that I hadn't had a chance to look at. Had my iphone, and charger and a couple of snacks, as I knew I was in for at least a 6hr stay. Got there a little early, and they took me right in. The RN started my IV, once he found a site to use Smiler The iron was already there, so we got right on it and started the test bolus. The RN said he was surpised we were doing a test bolus, because I had it a couple of time before with no issue. Well, after he turned the test bolus on to start, he got about 4 steps away from my stretcher and it started. Hot all over, severe back and chest pain, swelling in my throat and all over my body. Blood pressure dropped and pulse went crazy. I was having an anaphylactic reaction. They called a code, and thankfully saved my life.

Please, if you need iron infusions, always ask for a test bolus!!!! I now have an epi pen, as this is the second drug that I am now this allergic to. Please be careful. Now to figure out what we are going to do to get my iron stores back up!!
