I have an internal pouch and was recently told i have a very low iron level. So low in fact that it's affecting breathing and making me feel lightheaded.

I am taking iron supplements and recently i've noticed a lot more wind and sometimes bright blood in the toilet.

Is this a normal thing when taking iron supplements or is it something more serious???

Could it be pouchitis or similar???

Iron is tough on the gut. You should expect dark to black stools, but not bright red bleeding. Something else is going on. You were probably bleeding all along, but not enough to see, just enough to cause anemia.

It is quite possible that you just cannot tolerate the iron supplement you are on. Cramping, diarrhea and excess gas are side effects. But the frank bleeding means your are quite inflamed. Could just be cuffitis, which causes bright red rectal bleeding. But you need treatment. Stop the iron and call your doctor for advice. You may need iron infusions instead of oral iron.

I've got to see my doctor this afternoon so i'll mention this to him. I've had cuffitis before and i was given antibiotics which cleared it up. Felt a lot better afterwards too. Hopefully it is something as simple as that and not something more serious. I've also had an iron drip before because iron supplements affected me.

I'll let you know what happens.
