Over a year since jpouch removal and now I am faced with another "biggie". My surgeon is at the end of trying things to get this chronic wound to heal. No more I&D EUA surgeries. Yeah! But he is ready for flap repair surgery. Boo!

In the interim, I signed up for a few more of Dr. Shen's "pooh bear" (honey, dextrose, doxy,..) experimental injections. And we will then be doing more imaging to compare pre-first injection to post several injections to see if any fibrous tissue has actually started to form in the wound as signs that it may be healing.

If there are no results.. then its off with a gracilis muscle. (For those of you who are as uneducated as I was one week ago.. its in the inner thigh- from the knee up to your groin.) I met the plastic surgeon and I am blessed that he was as lovely, knowledgeable, and experienced as my other doctors at CC. But he showed me detailed pictures and explained the gory details. My surgeon would have to core out the sinus tract and wound making it much larger. Then the gracilis muscle (hopefully only from one of my legs) would be used to fill in the sinus and wound. Big big scary, terrifying surgery with two surgeons involved, lengthy hospital stay, and of course lots of complication potential.

And just tell me.. how the heck does someone with UC end up having to have a leg muscle cut. Seriously.

So please everyone. Do the pooh bear injection dance for me. Cross fingers, cross toes. I have to hope that these experimental treatments might get my wound to heal so I can avoid another huge surgery and an 8-10"scar down my leg.

Lizz,
I am doing the dance for you...upside down with a feather in it! I have had both gracilis surgeries done, one at 14 and one at 18 for reconstruction of the anal sphincter...it is NOT an easy surgery nor is it without complications...both short term and long term...those are big muscles that are aductors (forget my career as a professional skier!!!) they work on the stability of the knees...so I am praying to all of the bees in N.A. to make you some darned good honey and get that wound healed!
Good luck girl
Sharon
oh sharon, that's exactly what I thought. My plastic surgeon said they weren't really used. But I just couldn't believe it. And what I gathered via internet was exactly what you said.. aductors- knee and hip stability. I've got a call into a wonderful PT guy to find out the whole dirty truth about life without a gracilis. See problem is.. I was an athletic person, expecially running. so that knee thing... not liking that.
so keep on doing that dance and praying to the bees for me. thx sharon.
TE, Lizz,
Can we maybe join hands, chant in a circle and do a happy dance?
Yes Lizz,
The knees are a pain and I do believe that some of my hip problems are from that too but it may just be that the hips are something else entirely...but to put my 2.7cents in (calculate inflation please)...if it is the Only way to get that wound to heal then do not hesitate...you need to think healing before you can think running...

I have my fingers crossed and sending you all the positive karma I have that the easy (sort of) route works and you can avoid the gracialis procedure. But, in the end, the way you are going, were you running marathons anyway? So, if it comes to that, I suppose it is the lesser of two evils. Neither is appetizing, but you need an end in sight, even if it is imperfect.

Again, all the best luck to you!
