Over the past two years, my j-poucher has had two attempted bone grafts in his foot that have failed to heal. As we possibly head into a third attempt, which might utilize some experimental concentrated autologous bone marrow, the question of why he has failed to lay down new bone after the previous surgeries, which used iliac crest grafts that are relatively stem-cell rich, is of interest. He is not on any medication that would cause this. Last week the orthopedic foot specialist at UC Davis said that his UC and faulty immune system most likely are somehow the cause. This is a new one on me, and a quick search does not turn up anything about autoimmune diseases affecting bone healing. Has anyone else come across anything like this?
