I have never been a big drinker but do enjoy beer while watching sports, wine in restaurants anhd a vodka tonic few times per week as a night cap. Also, since I moved to south Louisiana to retire, to a country club community, there are lots of parties and drinking related opportuunities so I had been drinking more than usual.

I am just about 7 years since takedown (early stage CC) and have had zero problems. I get thoroughly screened, CT scans and scoped once per year with blood tests twice per year and never a problem until recently. I was feeling week, went to the doc and the blood test showed I was anemic. I had noticed no bleeding but the scopes and tests indicated stomach irritation and they said "Drinking did it"! I gave up booze three months ago and am back to normal. I also notice my pouch is doing better, Taco butt type symptoms are gone and I have fewer BMs, can sleep through the night better.

Anybody else notice alcohol and J-pouches don't mix for them? I am saving money, costs less to eat out and my wife who does not drink is happier so lesson learned for me. Comments?

I couldn't drink at all for probably a decade after my pouch surgery. But, I wasn't able to drink before it, because of perimenopausal hot flashes. I also had elevated liver enzymes due to fatty liver disease. Then, I hit menopause, lost some weight (more than 50 pounds). My liver enzymes normalized, and no more hot flashes. Been drinking a couple of glasses of wine with dinner every night since then. No pouch or butt problems, liver OK, no hot flashes.

Go figure!

Definitely. I can drink any liquor except red wine which gives me diarrhea, possibly due to the sulfites or tannins in it. Occasionally if I drink a good bit of hard liquor I will experience some mild butt burn. I was in Key West on vacation recently and drank significantly more than I usually do, mostly cocktails, and wine. I had one called a "Pain Killer" that had several rums in it, banana liquer and fruit juice. Also had "Havanas and Bananas" also with several rums, banana liquer and pineapple juice. If I drink such things on an empty stomach and eat nothing, the chances for butt burn are enhanced.

I would probably drink more, but I take so many meds and antibiotics that I think it would rather hasten the demise of my liver. I once asked my GI if my chronic antibiotic treatment for pouchitis would wreak havoc on my liver and he asked me if I was a big drinker. When I told him no, he said that was a good thing, and that I would be the "Guinea Pig" on the effects of long-term antibiotics on liver health.
I'm like CeeeCeee. I've never been much of a drinker, but I do notice that since my colon was removed, I get a tipsy much faster! I feel it after even 1 glass of wine. Oddly, I'm much better with beer. Smiler I don't notice much of a change with my pouch, but like I said, I rarely have more than 2 drinks, so it may not be enough to notice.
