Hi guys!

Yep, me, again! Seems I'm over doing it with the walking. My home care nurse gave me hell for going for a wonderful 10k walk the other day. She said I'll never heal if I keep that up. I still have a growing separation between my stoma and my skin that just won't close, not to mention a quarter size hole on my incision that is taking forever to close. But for the past year, all I've done is sit at home, and now that the weather is finally getting nice, I'm absolutely dying to be outside (I hate being I side on a sunny day, it's torture), so I need to figure out, how much is too much? Dr Cohen told me to exercise as much as possible, I have only 7 weeks until I'm suppose to return to work, so, what would you advise? I do love opening the windows and the sunroof, and going for a nice drive, but I get no exercise doing that. How did you recover from your surgery, and how long did it take before you were back to your usual pace? I'm just past 3 weeks post op now, so perhaps I'm pushing my luck, but I just hate sitting still now that I finally, after over a year, of being sick, that I have the energy to go out, please advise, thanks!

Eric - 10K??? Ok, let's go a bit slower my friend. Keep it to 1K at a time. Be outside by reading a book in the sun. If you push too hard now, you'll end up with recovery taking much longer. Maybe go for a leisurly walk in the morning and another in the afternoon. You can't make up for all your lost time at once - just remember you now have a whole lifetime of feeling good and with energy to make up for lost time.
I'd love to do that, and Toronto is on the water front (Lake Ontario), but with so many ships and power craft in the harbour I wouldn't take the risk (a good friend of mine rented a canoe, went out into the harbour, and got swamped by a ferry, sunk the canoe). I've actually found the solution, we have many beautiful parks here, so I drive to the park, and go for a short walk, my favourite being High Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Park), its just about time to see the cherry blossoms, so beautiful, and only a short walk, then I park my butt on the cafe patio, with my tea, and relax, life is good!
So glad to hear you're feeling well enough to go for a walk! But 10k?! Eeek! It sounds like you've found a great solution with driving to the park and walking a shorter distance when you're there.

I completely understand the desire to get out there and live life with your renewed health, but please listen to Jill's advice. We would be sad to see you take a step backward in your recovery because you rushed things.
