My pouch was disconnected last February due to a leak. I have had a temp loop ileostomy since. My surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic said as long as I'm not having any issues the jpouch can stay in as long as possible cuz it still has blood flow. They tried to repair it in August surgically but it failed, now Dr.Shen is going to give it one last attempt to close with a larger newer bear claw and an improved Fibrin glue without surgery. He said chances are higher to close due to me not being hooked up. Giving it just over a 50% chance to work. Not sure when that is happening though, hopefully by summer. My surgeon said dont be in a rush to go to a permanent ostomy just yet cuz there is always new things coming down the pipeline that may be able to fix the pouch. Once you go to permanent, its permanent.

I am just concerned about the risks of leaving my pouch in long term. I'm not having any issues with what i have now, except that i hate my ostomy with a passion. Always have. I know I have the option of a redo, but with the hell of the first surgery in 2008 that almost killed me, no thanks. I have a consult with Dr.Remzi in a few months just to get another opinion, but I hear he doesnt like to mess around and just likes to redo defective pouches. Funny thing is, his office is on same floor as my current surgeon..lol

Like you were told, as long as necessary and as long as you don't develop other problems. The only real issue is sphincter weakness from lack of use over time. But, it is not a given and not permanent, unless they are damaged somehow.

I have heard of people going from ostomy to funtioning j-pouch up to 20 years later.
