Hi all,

It's been a while since I've been on and posted anything. I'm currently going through a flare. It was found months back that I have crohns disease. Not sure if I developed crohns disease after my procolectomy or if I was misdiagnosed with UC before. In any event, my question is about urgency. How soon after you eat, do you feel the need to empty your j pouch?! I have always been in the range of 45 min to an hour until the urgency kicks in. Is that a normal time frame or could that be because of my crohns?

I would say it likely depends on how long ago your surgery was. Initially, as the system learns its new function, urgency would happen quickly, as the small intestine has not yet been trained to absorb some of the water, etc. that the colon used to do. As the years have gone on, for the most part I average around 4-6 hours after eating; the only times this varies are with certain foods (spicy things, very rich foods, normally which I try to avoid). If you are in a flare, that could definitely be playing a part as well.
