I have used every cream,  calmoseptine and just about every cream over the counter for acid butt burn in addition to prescriptions. . Have a j pouch for several years and have suffered on and off for years with this.  Have had a recent check to see if I might have hemorrhoids or fistulas, everything fine, just  irritation.  Is there something you can drink to maybe block the acids that this comes from, frequent bowel movements.

Thanks so much.

I believe they are products which can be digested to help either absorb or reduce bile acid, fortunately, I don't use such products and I've no idea of product names.

In the meantime, a product I swear by, which can relieve symptoms of butt burn over night and is applied onto the affected area is " ilex Protectant Paste"

I've experience fantastic results with this products; the trick is to apply a very small pea size amount and apply to the affected area, too much and it will feel sticky, gooey and uncomfortable.

I don't actually experience the more traditional type diaper rash butt burn, although I do experience itching and annoying tingling sensation within the anus.
To relieve this, I apply a small amount of ilex paste onto the tip of my finger and apply the paste into the anus and within minutes, I'm relieve of my discomfort until it occurs again, either in a few days, weeks or maybe months later.

Best results are achieved when ilex paste is applied after a BM just before bed.

Ilex Paste instruction state it's for External Use Only but I've used it in such a manner over the last few months without issues and my Stoma Nurse has said it is something they recommend, athough stressed it's not to be applied too deeply.

Questran does bind bile salts. I don't know if it does a darn thing for butt burn, though. It couldn't hurt to try it, I guess, as long as you don't take any medications at around the same time.

Are you applying the barrier creams faithfully *after* every BM? I'd recommed plain old zinc oxide, in case you're sensitive to some of the extra ingredients in the others.

Just after takedown surgery I experience excruciating butt burn and before the Doctors realised I had a tube ilex paste their treatment to reduce acid production was Omeprazole and Imodium.

It was mentioned that if the Imodium doesnt work there's a fibre drink which will reduce or absorb the bile acid ?

I was just regaining my appetite after surgery, yet it got to the point I was scared to eat as I feared the pain during a BM.

At the time, ilex Paste wasn't availbke in UK Hospitals; I had purchased it earlier for use around my stoma.

It made all the difference.

for me I use plain A n D ointment before n after going....also stay away from the horrible foods...

for me its fried eggs/ ice cream / bacon / nuts / sugary stuff

greasy fried food kill me. i can eat scrambled eggs but not fried...

keep area clean and dry...use a hand held spray in shower and change underwear alot...

had j-pouch for 8 years now....took me awhile to learn a lot...

I'm pleased you like us.
I briefly tried barrier creams just after takedown and nothing was as soothing or as effective as the ilex, although I too used far too much which initially put me off.

I first discovered ilex for use around the skin of my temporary Stoma; prior to ilex, I used all kind of potions, barrier creams n sprays, recommended by my Stoma Nurse and nothing worked.

ilex was recommend to me by a forum member from here.

Another trick to make ilex more user friendly and less sticky, once applied, wipe the area with a pure baby wipe, doing so kinda turns the ilex paste into a more manageable ointment and less sticky and gloopy.

I have had my J pouch for a little over 2 years and have suffered from butt burn almost constantly. I've tried a lot of products but the ones I found that have worked best for relieving the pain is good old diaper rash cream. My preferred brand is Desitin Rapid Relief. Another product I found helpful is Tucks whitchhazel cooling pads. In regards to trying to prevent butt burn from happening I cut out a lot of problems foods, refined sugars and gluten, and started juicing. For me this has made such a difference. I hope that you find what works for you and start feeling better.

Kris 10- Thank you so much, I have and will continue to try many wonderful ideas that have been given to me, in the hope of eventually relieving my constant problem.

It is such a wonderful feeling that so many people have come forward in an effort to try and help me.  I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Something I used before surgery and have continued with is a low pressure bidet.  They help a lot to get all the stool off your skin without excessive wiping which contributes to irritation.  A model that I purchased for about $45 was a Hyundai Bidet.  It fits on your toilet seat and easily connects to your water supply line.  I am spoiled by it. I hate to have to use a toilet without one.  Good luck!

Hi JKC- Thanks so much for your response.  Since the beginning of my surgery I must be close to a faucet, I use charmin the red one and wipe myself with very warm water after each bm, there are times when I am away  from home and not to close to a faucet, usually I take a large plastic cup and fill it with hot to warm water, I find this very soothing, but when things get really bad and I have 12 to 14 bms daily, nothing helps me,unfortunately. My life has not been easy for me, I have had 14 surgeries, six for j pouch reversal ,as I had blood clots, hence, returned to a bag for a year then had a few more j pouch surgeries, also stomach hernias, gall bladder removal etc. etc., at one time I  had a port in my arm I needed nutrition when I had the bag got  an infection got sepsis and nearly died in the hospital, all my vitals stopped and through some miracle from Saint Jude who I pray to daily, I survived, even the doctors could not believe it, they had told my partner to contact my family since I was not going to make it. Here I am so although things get so bad and I want to give up, I think of my small miracle.  I am so glad I found the j pouch group. they have helped me so much, thank you all for your wonderful support.

Yeah some users do apply Vaseline over the ilex paste, however, I believe the Vaseline is only necessary when too much ilex has been applied.

When I began using ilex to treat butt burn, I smeared it on like applying Sudocrem diaper rash cream; by doing so, although it relieved the pain and discomfort of the butt burn, I created a sticky, uncomfortable and gloopy mess.

That is, until I realised only a small pea size amount of ilex paste is required.

Although, this may depend on the severity of the skin damage.
