I have been taken immodium for the past 10 years and wondering if I could switch to a homeopathic medicine by Boiron.

I was  told that immodium affects your liver over time. I take 1 before breakfast and 1 before dinner.

my thinking  though is, that our diarrhea is different from the diarrhea regular folks experience.

any thoughts?

Thank you very much!

It’s always a good idea to reconsider medications you’ve been on for a long time, to make sure they’re still the best choice for you, and even whether they are still necessary. Bowel slowers like Imodium and Lomotil are sometimes used for things they do poorly, like managing stool consistency or all-day stool frequency. They are good at delaying pouch filling, though, so I use them when I really want to put off bathroom use, such as at bedtime or before getting on a boat. As @Aimc wrote, psyllium is a better way to manage stool consistency. If your overall frequency is too high then the problem is either pouch capacity or stool volume rather than a timing issue.

What do you think (or hope) the Imodium is doing for you?

I think a homeopathic alternative is most likely to be completely worthless.

I have no problems with my liver just don’t like to take medications over a long time if I can avoid it.

homeopathic medicine works in mysterious ways and I was wondering if anyone has taken it.

thank you all for the input.  I will call the manufacturer to get some info.

Sara Marie, it’s called Diaralia, 60 melt away Tablets by Boiron.

I tried the Diaralia for a car trip (it is for traveler's gut, after all), and it seemed to have a mild effect.  I didn't have to stop all that much.  I also tried their hemorrhoid suppository, which worked great for treating symptoms of hemorrhoids!  There was less irritation.  Hemorrhoids actually make me want to poop more because anything that is pushing them from the inside increases the irritation.  I ran out of the suppositories, though, and wish I had more.  There isn't necessarily a given time limit on the suppositories, but with the Diaralia, it is recommended to take it only a few days.  I haven't experimented with it for watery stools yet, so I don't know if it has a direct effect on that.  I do feel like the combination of the Diaralia and the hemorrhoid suppository made for a more comfortable car trip with fewer stops, which has been great for the road trip I'm on right now.  I'll probably try that for the drive home, too, if I can find more suppositories at the store here.

Imodium didn't work well for me and Lomotil has atropine in it, which affects me very badly. So over the years I have figured out a non-medicine way to combat watery stools. Here it is: Matzah with peanut butter spread on it and sliced bananas on top. Delicious, nutritious and naturally slows down the system, thickening stools. Don't eat this if constipation is an issue for you. Good luck!!

What time of the day do you eat this?  Does it work all day long, or just until your gut has processed it?

I might try this with "Flackers" (flax crackers) since I'm not much into the wheat thing.

Sometimes I eat it several times a day. It just depends on the situation. It usually returns the situation to relative normality in a few hours on one "dose" but sometimes it takes more.

Oh ok, so it stabilizes the system, which for you is not watery.  Got it.  I have been eating more soluble fiber to help keep my normal on the less watery side, but I haven't figured it out so that the consistency is perfect. The stools are never hard, but sometimes they're more difficult for my reconstructed, scarred inner muscles to contend with.  I did the watery stool thing for years...I had no support or guidance and I was teaching in the classroom and never had time to worry about it.  Pooping was definitely faster that way, but over time, I think I became a bit nutrient deprived since there was really no time for proper absorption.  Also, my guts became floppy with such fast transit and of course, aging, and I started having more frequent partial bowel obstruction from them getting tangled up.  After I started psyllium before each meal, the bowel obstructions stopped.  I think it strengthened the muscles in the gut and made them less floppy.  Also, my guts just felt better, like they had more structural integrity.  None of these things are medical descriptions or verified by any doctor, it's just what I noticed.

This is exactly why I believe anecdote stories, they are important! J-pouch surgery is still considered new so we need patient experiences told
