Hi, everyone.
Here is a site with a recorded history of stomas dating back to the 1700s. We have it hard in modern times with burn, frequency, excoriated skin, rough toilet paper, barrier creams, leakage. Imagine doing all that in the 1700s where running water was whatever you found in the ditch in front of your house and toilet paper was many years away. One poor woman had a stoma created, probably on the kitchen table without any form of anaesthesia or a doctor's clean hands. She was given a sponge to tie around her waist to soak up the stool. However, some patients managed to live years this way. Interesting site! It is stomawise.co.uk
