Hi, has anyone had a hip replacement? I should have my left hip replaced. By the way, I have slightly deeper hips since I was born, so maybe that's the reason for the worn out cartilage from my age of 35. If anyone has experience, because it was easier for me to go to surgery for the j pouch than for this. Thank you

Hi Enterin,

I had my first hip replacement at age 45 in 2017. I had my second hip replacement in 2021. I considered it a standard replacement. This means my PT, pain management and walking assistance was how most patients are treated (except some geriatric patients) and it went smoothly.

After your surgery, you are literally walking same day or the next day. I only stayed 1 night in the hospital for both surgeries. It shouldn’t risk or affect any part of your Jpouch. I have a Kpouch and going to the bathroom was a challenge but I managed. It really was a smooth procedure.

My only tip is  remember the hips are new and be cautious on activities that you do. My doctor warned me stay alert on walking, driving, and activities. I was walking on a hill that turned slick  I fell and dislocated my right hip, the first replacement. It was a terrible situation and I had to return to the protocol that I used when it was first replaced. In other words my doctor stated the hips aren’t connected as strongly and anyone that had a hip replacement is prone to dislocation. That was my doctor’s warning.

All the best to you. If your hip replacement is inevitable, I’d do it young! Your recovery should be even easier!

i had both hips replaced in the oughts, when i then had a j pouch.  no problem at all.  be careful about infections, even after you are post surgery.  i developed septic infection and both needed to be replaced.  i downhill skiied for awhile, even kept up rollerblading.   as i got older and had shoulders replaced and back problems  i scaled back to cross country.  my  suggestion is to work diligently w your physical therapist and develop strong muscles on both hips and legs, along with maintaining your balance.  think positive--at least that always helps me.  peace, jan
