Hello,

I developed a hernia following jpouch reconstruction surgery 10 years ago. My hernia is an ugly bump portruding out about 2 inches above my belly button on my behind my certical scar and is quite noticeable.

I don't have any oain or any complications at the moment. Ithe size of the herniavis griwing slowly

I had a consultation with specialist and hernia surgeries.

The doctor recommened surgery.  She explained that my stomach was weak, and repairing thus one would probably result in others. She recommended doing hernia repair now, while I am healthy. Complications could present themselves later on. I am 58,so not so young anymore  It would be major surgery as she would go in through my existing scar (robot is not recommended due to scar tissye), and (for lack of a btter word) reinforce my stomach wall and adjust my stomach muscles (they are messed up due to past surgeries). Due to my scar tissue, standard hernia surgery would not be possible. Surgery would ve at least 4 hours and I would have to be in a hospital for about a week. Recovery would be a few weeks, mostly due to healing and  pain management.

Has anyone had any hernia surgery  following jpouch surgery? Does what my doctor say make sense? Is it really more complicated for us do to scar tissue?

Does it ever end for us?

Thanks,

Solomin

Hey Solomin, sorry to hear about your hernia. Unfortunately that is pretty common with our surgery.

i have never had hernia surgery but i think your doctor is right, the younger you get the surgery the better.

dad got the proctocolectomy surgery recently at 70 and he is having complications from that but is recovering. The younger you are for any surgery the better.

has your doctor mentioned you getting cardiac clearance and pulmonary clearance???

I had an incisional hernia repair about year after my j-pouch surgery when I was about 41. It was not as complicated as yours. However, it was supposed to be an ambulatory surgery and I wound up being kept overnight. I had a mesh repair. I don’t remember any serious issues with it. I did have a seroma that needed draining, but otherwise it was pretty much a nothing burger compared to my j-pouch and the litany of complications from that. As far as your age goes, your overall health is more important than your age. Plus, a lot depends on what sort of healer you are, such as, are you prone to adhesions or wound separations.

Good luck with it!

Jan
