Hello all,

I have had a J-Pouch for just about 10 years. The first year or two were kind of rough but since then it has been going well (knock on wood).

Opposite of of my ileostomy scar, right on the other side of my midline scar, I have always had a little fat deposit (possible scar tissue as well?). I always assumed this was normal and considering I was rail thin when I was very ill during my last surgery, I have put on some healthy weight and I guess it makes that fatty spot more noticeable considering I am still rather skinny. Especially since my ileostomy scar is kind of concave on the other side. Last week at a cardiologist appointment for a family screening - the doctor looked at my scars and questioned whether that was a incisional hernia over that fat deposit. I have no pain and feel like I have had that little bulge for almost 10 years. Does anyone else have that going on near their scars? Or has anyone had experience with an incisional hernia and can they go unnoticed for that long?

Thank you!

I started working and made 2 hernias. One by my navel scar and the other by my stoma scar. Mine didn't hurt either just a protrusion. I had a consult with a surgeon about what to do. She told me that my hernias did not pose any health risk right now but that hernias in time will get larger. I had surgery with mesh. The recovery didn't take long. I didn't want to take any chances with them getting bigger. Actually while I was in surgery, one of the hernias was bigger that anticipated.  I would suggest getting it check out

Sorry to hear that! What do you think caused it? Possibly: Overeating, excessive exercise, coughing/sneezing???

Thank you guys for replying and the insight - I am seeing a new GP this week to take the first step in checking it out (just changed insurance).  It's just odd because it is not on my stoma scar side and just happens to be where I have always had some excess belly fat. The crappy part of being rail thin when getting the surgery done was how easy it was to put on weight.  I also was pretty vigorous with exercising and working the last 8 or 9 years as well.  Not an inkling of pain or discomfort either.  I will report back here and I appreciate hearing your stories as well.

You are welcome and please keep us updated

Exercising vigorously definitely can cause the hernia: I keep my exercising sessions at least 30minutes but no more than 1hr, very rarely I go over an hour.
