So I saw my colorectal surgeon today, and it seems I need a hernia repair AND a stoma revision. My head is spinning. Although I realize neither are a big deal in comparison to my past surgeries, it still is more surgery. He says he can't do them at the same time, which I don't understand, but what could I do about that? Nothing! So I have 2 more to go, when I though I was finished!!

Ok, my ranting out of the way, he says he doesn't want to do the hernia yet. I have had surgery every summer (I am a teacher) for the past 5 years, and he says he wants to give me a break, more time to get stronger and gain more weight. He said this will change if it turns into an emergency surgery (bowel strangulation), but his heart tells him that we can wait a bit. I am concerned, because although I am in NO rush, I am nervous that the situation can change, and then I will have to miss work. Does anyone have any insight or advice?

Thanks!
Shari

Rant away...You deserve it...
Well it is not such bad news, the hernia can always be done through laporoscopy but I know nothing about the stoma revision....just follow your gut too and tell yourself that you will know when you are ready....
Hang in there, I understand the disappointment but once we start on this slippery slope we never know where it will end (or when!)...

Sharon knows a whole lot more about surgeries than I. However, back in 2006, my surgeon, Dr Vincent Fazio, said that my hernia, resting sort of above my k-pouch, could not be corrected laproscopically. He did the repair using a tennis racket incision around my k-pouch stoma and it has held. After surgery, he described my hernia as "three finger" -- I guess referring to its length.

I suppose there are exceptions depending on the individual and previous surgeries. (During the same surgery, another surgeon, Dr. Walsh, removed my gall bladder laproroscopally.)
Lynne,
My k pouch surgeon said that it was impossible too but after he operated side by side with my French surgeon, the French guy, Dr B, got some ideas and innovated...he really had to invent something that would work without having to open me up again (we were on 7 or 8 over 1-2yrs)...so he decided to cut the mesh like a wide doughnut with a bite taken out of the side...he then placed the mesh all the way around the stoma and overlapped the ends to create a wide collar (or necklace) around the stoma..that shored up the peristomal hernia very well and so far, so good...after 4 open sugeries to repair it and the damage that it caused to the stoma/valve each time this was the only viable surgical technique that worked...
I still applaude the man for taking a risk, considering that he had never even heard of the k pouch 1 yr previously...
If for any reason your surgeon wants the operative reports I can ask for them...
By the way, it prevented me from needing more valve/stoma surgery too..
