Hello everyone, I'm "attempting" to remove my first stone wafer and replace it.. Unfortunately, in the hospital they put so much adhesive glue under the stone I can't remove it. I was told it would wear off naturally but it's been Almost 6 days and no luck. I've tried putting hot water on the wafer, taking a shower soaking it , etc and every time I try to pull it and hold my skin down it won't budge and if it does it hurts so bad and gets irritated that it will leave a rash if I do manage to get it off! Anyone have any suggestions ? I've also heard someone so they don't put any glue underneath the stoma wafer, and just put it around the atoms itself, anyone try this method ? Help is greatly appreciated !

I use a spray called SensaCare. As I peel I spray a bit and it drops right off. I hope this helps. Any adhesive releaser especially a spray should help. That's all I have. They do make releaser wipes but I found the spray works best.

I use the adhesive remover spray as well. Works great. Stoma nurses didn't suggest it. Found it online myself after reading posts here. I use the Hollister brand.
I had the same issues as you. Stoma nurse told me the first change I did that the wafer was stuck on more than any she had ever seen. Good and bad problem.
I do not use any paste or adhesive other than the wafer.
Thank you , so does anyone use any adhesive paste on the bottom of the wafer before you place it or on, or do you just place it on without the paste? Someone I know told me they don't even use the paste and just simply place it on and put the paste around only the stoma itself or something along those lines?
I use a dab of paste at each side of the stoma where my cut lines are. But it comes right off with the spray.

I do not use any paste. I use a barrier ring and the wafer.
I tried a barrier ring. Too much. I didn't need it.
I think it's all individual. Find something you like and works and use it. We have nothing but time to o try different stuff.

I agree with Richard. Call all the major companies and ask for samples. Stick with whatever you like and works for you. They will send you lots of products to try. Also they will ask questions on the shape, size, and type of stoma to help send the right products.
I actually got my sample kit today!! Got a lot of stuff, one of them happens to be the barrier ring. I really hate the paste .. so if I just use the barrier ring I won't need paste and won't have to worry about a leak?
I hate the paste too!!!
i think it will depend on your body. I have never tried the wafer without the barrier ring but have had great success with the Hollister ceraplus wafer and their barrier ring. I tend to think the ring keeps it all sealed up and helps keep leaks down. But that might not be the case for everyone.
Try it out and see if you like it!
im not sure that you should use both the paste and the ring. I hope the ring works great for you! It's definitely less messy and easier to remove.
Good luck!!!
I just did my first wafer change. And used the ring with no paste. I will see how it works. Hopefully no leaks lol.
Fingers crossed!!!
And just so you know....It gets easier!! Each and every time.
I just had surgery last year and was terrified for my first change and how "stuck" it was to my skin. And so close to the incision.
Now a year later I'm changing like a pro! Lol! You sound positive and upbeat in your initial message but I wanted to tell you that this is not an big deal and it gets so much easier and routine.
Best of luck!!
Good luck! I was going to suggest goo-gone!
Use a warm hair dryer to ease the wafer off your skin. Gently separate the wafer from your belly. Don't tug or pull.....just ease it off. Best wishes!
Not sure if you grow hair around the stoma, but if you do, make sure to shave the area during each change. Several days of hair growth under the adhesive hurts very much when you go to remove it.
Hello, KC23.
The type of soap you use could also affect the adhesiveness of your wafer. Try not to use moisturizing soaps or cleansing gels. The moisturizing oils in these products might cause the wafer to loosen and you'll have a small leak. I used a bar of plain old Ivory soap. I had small packets of remover pads from Coloplast and would gently dab, dab along the edges of the wafer as I pressed my skin away from the sticky parts, then a warm washcloth to dab the skin, looking for rash or raw spots. I had a crease on one side of my stoma and couldn't get a perfect seal and used to leak at that spot until I learned to put on the wafer and hold my palms over the wafer for at least 45 seconds. The heat from my hands would make the adhesive "take" all around. I also made sure I smoothed and pressed the ring all the way around, not just until I heard "clicks". The hospital nurse sent me home with a bag that she only clicked at its top, bottom, and sides, but not all the way 360 degrees around. It leaked out the side the third hour I got home. Press the ring all the way around to make sure the edges latch onto each other all the way around. Good luck to you. You'll be scheduled for takedown before you know it.
