We all know there's no better feeling than dropping a BM and having it come out in one clean clump with little wipe, and not needing to return for several hours.

i'm trying to understand what compounds/processes can arrive and contribute to this effect.

for instance, we already know metamucil/fiber is a manner to arrive at this end. but the other day, i ate a roll of starbursts, and my BM came out much cleaner than it usually was. i know starburst doesn't have fiber....so what did the binding?

i believe immodium reduces the water overall.

i want to understand the science behind the options so i can figure out what to add to each meal to arrive at this desired end.

Yup-starbursts have pectin. Pectin is what is added to fruit when making jelly, to help it gel. When my son had diarrhea as a toddler, before they figured out he had H Pylori and a torn up gut, the GI recommended pectin as a way to try to firm him up.

I have damaged sphincters and do best when my stool is as thick as possible. I take 8 Metamucil capsules, 2 immodium, and a codeine before each meal. If I have had too much insoluble fiber (i.e. raw fruits/veggies, popcorn, nuts), I try to offset with starchy carbs like a bagel or oatmeal or rice to bulk up again.
