I think I finally have my first blockage. I have tried a hot drink (decaffeinated) and that didn't work. I am still going a little bit and in the middle of the night I thought it broke loose because it came out like all liquid, but I still have the pain and feel blocked and it is up higher in my belly. I have never had this before. So could I be blocked more in my stomach or what do you think is going on. No fever. Just a very full and in some pain for the fullness. I have not been able to go any to the bathroom since it was all liquid. Sorry for the details.

What I am wondering is why grape juice works? I am now drinking that and I pray this will work. But I just want details as to why this works for some.

Thanks so much,

Hi Grandma,
So sorry for the blockage.
My list is:
hot baths, bouncing up and down gently on my toes or on a yoga ball, grape juice, hot green tea, heating pads on my back and tummy, gently doing stretches to try to stetch it out..
If you suddenly have sharp pains, nausea, throwing up, sudden headache, bleeding or fever then please don't hesitate to call your doctor or go to the ER.
As long as there is stuff coming out as well as gas and no fever or severe pain than I would say to try to wait it out but if anything changes call you doctor, please.
Hope that this passes quickly

This is exactly how my first obstruction started that I had a month ago. If you are not vomiting, just keep pushing the liquids and stay away from solids until it passes. The grape juice does seem to help. I didn't realize what it was when it started, and I treated it entirely the wrong way eating bland binding foods and hardly any liquids. Now that I know what this feels like, it will be easier to manage in the future if it happens again.

Grandma,
The pain under your ribs could be your galbladder if you still have one. If you do, it might be acting up, have stones or just be pissed at you for not eating....if you don't have one it could be pissed at you for not eating as well...I find that since I had mine out, if I go without food, I get pain and nausea (just not the same as the pain pre-removal).
Keep the fluids going strong...lots of hot liquids...if you are dizzy from not eating, try drinking chicken broth...it is full of sodium and other goodies for you...it might put pay to the dizzies.
Hang in there

Yes, I also had the pain you are describing. For me, it was worse shortly after eating. As Sharon said, the pain could be gall bladder. In my case, we ruled that out and it was for sure a site of blockage. If I had to pinpoint it, it felt like where my stomach would empty into my small intestine. I had it for ~3 weeks ranging from painful during the blockage to mild while recovering. If you think the blockage has cleared, eat low fiber foods as not to further irritate the bowels. If you think it is still there though, if you want to eat food, maybe make smoothies or eat stuff that will be kind to the inflamed area. The area of the obstruction could be tender for awhile. Really just keep the liquids going and drink as much as you possibly can. Best bet for avoiding the hospital and an NG tube :-)

Thank you so much. You have shed some light on some things I have not thought about. I have never had an NG tube. And I have had so many surgeries I have no idea if I have my gall bladder or not. But I honestly think I do. I know it is hard to believe I would not remember but God hasn't dealt me a great hand with my health. But I am still alive and I keep kicking everyday. He hasn't given up on me yet Smiler Thank Goodness cause neither have I. I will have to go through my notes and what my mom has given me for the previous surgeries and see. I wish they had computers back then so we could just look things up. I really also wish I had kept all the copies of my surgeries or should have requested them to keep!!! A learning lesson. Today is better. I am still going to the bathroom. More liquid then anything. My GI doctor always said that if I am going then I don't have a blockage. I sure didn't feel that way all weekend.

Thanks so much gals for helping me out. I never thought of something else being wrong. And I am praying it is NOT something else.......

God Bless everyone on this site for all the help.

Gradma,
Galbladder is no biggie anymore...most of us have had it as a seperate surgery, they don't like to contaminate one zone with ukky digestive bile from another...too risky. They did mine last year through laporoscopy and it was fine (except that we waited way too long to get it done, not advised)...
You would know if you had had it because it is often after the age of 40 and you do get gastric distress, pain in your back in the upper-middle part, shoulder, in front under your ribs or just tummy...depends on the woman...some have no symptoms at all.
If you have a partial blockage some stuff can come through, usually liquidy but the majority of it is blocked behind something...keep up those fluids.
Hugs and hope that you feel better soon.
