I have FAP & had 2nd jpouch surgery in 2012. I have been doing great, very healthy. My surgeon was doing the upper GI's for me until recently when he referred me to a GI Doc. GI Doc immediately scheduled an upper endoscopy & ultrasound of my thyroid which was definitely evidenced based as FAP affects these areas. However, he also ordered CT of my abdomen & GI Small Bowel Series. Not sure as to why he ordered the last especially & he had really no good reason. Furthermore, on my CT that I just had done, they found "suspicious" mass on the out right wall of my rectum. Now the radiologist wants to biopsy that. When I suggested it could be scar tissue, the nurse I spoke to scheduling it basically laughed. I'm going to try to get in touch with my surgeon because I feel we're chasing zebra's which is costing a lot plus the fact I don't want to be exposed to a lot of radiation unless absolutely necessary. Anybody been through the same tests the GI Doc considers routine for an FAP patient who is healthy?

Thanks.

I also have FAP and am thankful that my GI does regular scope exams and takes biopsies wherever he feels necessary.  This is how he determined that I had high grade dysplasia in the anal canal and recommended surgery to eliminate the risk of cancer.  A good GI should be able to determine if the suspect area is scar tissue and should take biopsies if he has any suspicion of dysplasia.  With FAP, regular scope exams are necessary (both upper and lower).  In my case, only a limited number of radiology exams were done for FAP.  The small intestine can be checked, if necessary, by capsule endoscopy in which you swallow a pill sized camera and involves no radiation exposure.
