This is an odd question but has anyone's hair become incredibly brittle and fally outty from chrons or uc...possibly from a j pouch? I have been experiencing seriously bad hair loss....that's just recently. (Since december) i haad my surgery years ago and had some issues w my hair but lately....yikes! so I'm kinda thinking the steroids are working their special kind of "making a person pretty" magic that they're so amazing at. But then I hear from the few people I know w chrons that after suffering from it that their hair and nails are like....total crap years after surgery as well so.....anyone else have prednisone hairloss...or could it just be lack of vitamins from my disease? I do take some supplements for it... and my dr put me on stuff that seems to help (SLOWLY) Its sad I cnt take the hair skin and nails vitamins for some reason. they really mess my stomach uuuup! :/

It is really common for hair to fall out after anesthetic, a serious illness, a shock or certain medications. I think that cortisone is one of them...

There are different things that you can take like supplements (collagen, vit B, Zinc...if your doctor permits it) but there are also physical things that you can do to help your hair grow back (not sure if it will stop it from falling out though).

When I had a long series of surgeries/illness in 2007-2009 I lost a lot of hair (I looked like a plucked chicken)...so I went to see my dermatologist who suggested that I wash my hair much less frequently, use H&S shampoo (there is a zinc extract in it I think) and massage your scalp for at least 5 minutes every time that you wash it...also hanging with your head down (like in certain yoga positions) helps to increase the blood flow to the roots and stimulates growth.

The more the roots are stimulated the better chance of regrowth.

Another thing that is suggested is to not use shampoo on your hair (yuck!?) but wash your hair with cream rince only (it contains 10% washing agents in it anyway so your hair does get clean), gentley massaging the scalp then rincing. If you do use shampoo then only 1x/week max and not a harsh one.

I started doing that a few years ago after a friend suggested it and nowadays I find it perfectly normal...my hair stays clean, my scalp doesn't get oily and my hair looks healtier.

Yes, I felt like I lost a good bit of hair after my surgeries.  Since I have an identical twin brother, there may be a bit of science to be had here!  He lost his hair a bit faster than I did before surgeries, but it seems like the loss trend quickly sped up for me after the last surgery.

I have taken Kirkland Minoxidil foam for about six months now and pretty much no longer have the "male pattern" bald spot any longer, so it's working.  But, my hair is noticeably thinner and less flexible/dryer and continuing to turn more gray.  But I think my brother is pretty much on the same page, but never offered to give me half of his healthy colon.

Lol.....I wish someone in my life would give me half a colon too.

I never had hair problems before. My surgery has been many years ago so I'm thinking possibly it's like early menapause or like....allll the meds I take for chrones. or quite possibly I'm just damned to be bald lol I dunno. It started really falling out around december. It would litterally clump up and just fall out like it was a rats nest or something. It came off in huge balls.it was horrifying. I dnt get it.....i always took amazing care of my hair. Since I was a teenager i bought the really expensive stuff from salons and all kinds of oils. And i used to take better care of my skin at age 12 then most 40 year olds do now lol. (Its silly but i remember seeing mommy dearest when i was young and took her noxema and ice on the skin twice a day regimon like it was religion....i thought if i do this prepping now ill never get old mwahahaha.....welp im old now lol)

Back to my hair it used to be thick and long. I recently had to chop off like 4 inches off the bottom because it looked just terrible.my hair has always been really super long so four inches to me was devistateing. It stinks....because of my recent hairloss I really loooook sick right now. no hideing it. I wear baseball hats 24/7. my nails kinda are suffering too but I always had crappy nails.

I can't take the hair nails n skin vitamins stuff. I don't know why but it litterally makes me so sick I can't even walk after three hours of taking them. I do take biotin alone it seems to be all I can handle supplement wise. I was looking around and asked my dr about a few meds that can be prescribed for it and so far so good but I still look really thinned out. I was thinking about getting like.....extensions but just to thicken up my hair not for length. I dunno if that's even possible.any hairdressers on here know if there's anything g other then a wig to make your hair look better till it grows back.

I suffered all of the above.  However, recently I have had keratin treatments from my hairdresser.  I had 3 keratin treatments in the past year and cut off all of the straw-like dead ends to shoulder length.  My hair is now fully restored to a soft and silky state.  I didn't even need a keratin treatment the last time that i went in for a color treatment.  It's expensive, but soooo worth it!

Keritin...hmm I know I used to use Keritin nexus shampoo a wile back and I loved it but haven't seen it were I get my stuff in over a year. I cldnt find it at the stores either.i switched to this stuff joico or something. Smells awesome.Im prob gonna have to chop a good 5 inches off my ends if not more but I Litt cry just thinking about it lol...my poor little dead dried out babys! Oh well it grows back I guess. Mine just takes sooooo long to grow .

I finished my last Jpouch surgery in February and I started developing Alopecia (hair loss). Its kind of in patches, but my dermatologist (who is a hair loss specialist) thinks that sometimes it's your body's way of reacting to stressful situations....and boy is the surgery process stressful on your body. Alopecia is also another type of autoimmune disease, so there's also that connection. hope yours gets better with time!
