So I have one year to go, but almost 30 years ago I had my subtotal colectomy followed by j-pouch. At the time, I asked my surgeon if there was anything I shouldn't eat and he replied in surgeon-like style, if something bothers you, don't eat it again. Well, that turned out to be trickier than I thought it would.

I have not been on meds at all since whatever postoperative meds I might have had and I do have a ano-vaginal fistula that formed within 8 years of my surgery. Never operated on because of location and I just realized I haven't even noticed it for years. Sounds pretty good eh, and it has been pretty satisfactory except for the bathroom thing and the inability to gain weight.

So skipping all the how I finally came to get off gluten story, I have now been eating gluten-free for about three weeks. The first day I only used the bathroom 3 times. That's my normal/average cut in half. If I stay away from other known bloat-causing foods like milk (cheese is ok) and soy (I live in Japan) and the sort of fibrous veggies that no one can digest, it is now quite possible for me to poop only 2x a day.

Yes, that's right folks. I consider it a miracle. I didn't even have the classic signs of celiac or gluten sensitivity and didn't bother getting tested. I've been mulling over trying this for years and just didn't think it would be worth it. But it's not bad at all. I found from the beginning that I wasn't craving snacks all the time like I used to. I eat three meals and maybe a snack. I no longer NEED something to eat between dinner and bedtime.

So I think I'm going to continue. If I revert back to my old poop-filled days despite the diet change, I'll come back and fess up. Otherwise, off to live my new life. I haven't lost any weight yet and have hopes of gaining.

For anyone fence-sitting....worth a tryWink

Hi Everyone! I know this is an old topic, but i want to see if ANYONE has the same experience as me. I had my jpouch surgery 13 years ago and thought having diarrhoea all the time and FOUL (and I mean FOUL as in, could have been a DEAD RAT inside me) smelling stools was completely normal for people with Jpouch procedure... I always had bad gas which was worse or better, depending on what I ate...

Then 2 years ago I got a bad kidney infection and developed burning pain around my kidney area and blood in my urine (Microscopic blood)... So to cut a LONG story short, I saw 2 Urologists, my bowel specialist, 2 Gynaecologists, and a Nephrologist, ALL of which said I was 'fine'...

Im STILL getting the burning back pain on and off (every 3-6 weeks), but i have basically CUT OUT Wheat/ Gluten 3 weeks ago and my bowel started actually becoming quite 'normal...' also VERY little gas...

I had a SMALL bit of wheat about 4 days ago and i have DESPERATE Diarrhoea the past 3 days and again, the burning back pain is back...

Im beginning to think I must be SEVERELY Coeliac.... / Celiac.... ANYONE HAVE A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE?? Im so frustrated with the pain ! It's burning and burning and really getting me down!

PLEASE HELP or share your experience!! Thanks xxx
