Dr Remzi is a surgeon , not a GI.
If need a GI in the NYC area, see Dr Shen at Presbyterian as he is the most knowledgeable Jpouch GI in the world.
Agree with pouchomarx. If you think you may have a surgical issue, Remzi would be valuable. I saw him in NY when he just got there. They were supposed to be forming an IBD center so that may be worth checking out.

My bad! Thanks Your answer is perfect

Hey Sher,
I'm in NJ, though most all of my GI/surgical work is done with NYC docs. That said, I'm actively thinking of staying local for future pouchoscopies. I have a couple of gastroenterologists that I'm considering ... If you want the names then pm me and I'll shoot them over to you.
Michael
If you are still exploring surgical options, I enthusiastically recommend Dr. Kiran at Columbia University Medical Center. Right over the GW Bridge. I'm 1 week post takedown surgery with him right now.
I consulted with Dr. Remzi first. Was concerned that he proposed an open abdominal surgery. Called one of his former Cleveland Clinic colorectal surgery colleagues who recommended Dr. Kiran at Columbia, who was in the colorectal surgery group in Cleveland also. He would do the surgery laparoscopically. (Dr Bo Shen who someone on this chain mentioned as a leading gastroenterologist, was also in the Cleveland GI group when these surgeons were there. He's now at Columbia.)
Travelled from upstate NY for a laparoscopic stage 1 in May and the take-down last week with Dr. Kiran who was has wonderful both in his technique and bedside manner. I've had excellent results with almost no pain, no disability following surgeries. Great super responsive office staff, including his Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Ostomy Nurse and Dietician. Surgery was at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Couldn't have gotten better care.
In addition to J-pouch he is one of the few surgeons - in the world I think - performing K-pouch. That's a continent illeostomy. I decided to do the j-pouch knowing I could go back for a k-pouch if I don't like the results. Too soon to tell. But I expect I will adjust well to the j-pouch.
Talk to a few surgeons and ask lots of questions. Good luck!

Are you okay? I heard you were in the ER???
Mt Sinai IBD research center at NYC has GIs that specialize on j-pouches and see many j-pouch patients for their research. The new NYU IBD group also has one j-pouch specialized GI, but she has less publications than the ones at Mt Sinai IBD research center.
Having been a patient of both NYU and Mt Sinai IBD group, I have to say Mt Sinai team treat you with empathy, whereas at NYU, you are just a patient. Remzi is great though, and in general people treat you well at NYU, but I prefer the Mt Sinai IBD research center. For example, when I needed more ostomy supplies, the nurses at NYU were giving me hard time for changing my prescription. I felt I was at their mercy. But at Mt Sinai, all I had to do was to leave a voicemail message for an updated prescription! They never question why I need more supplies like the ones at NYU did. When I took leave from work after surgeries, the doctor assistants at NYU were very rigid when filling documents for getting time off from work, as if I am asking for a vacation that I do not deserve! But at Mt Sinai, they were very generous and flexible while filling time-off documents for work. The surgeon told me “take as much time as you want”! Also, the nurses at the hospital at Mt Sinai are way better trained and experienced than NYU hospital nurses. It is not only about the doctor but the entire care team.
Mt Sinai IBD research center is a much older and established institution than the new NYU IBD and Columbia IBD groups. It seems to me that NYU and Columbia brought star names like Remzi and Shen to attract patients, just to make money out of lucrative IBD surgeries; while Mt Sinai IBD research center is more research focused.. Maybe that is why they treat patients with more empathy.
I went to Dr Serur at Englewood. She's a fine surgeon and truly compassionate. This attitude carries through with the office staff.
Thank you to all for sharing. Very valuable information. I have been laid up recently 1st with bowel obstruction and then most recently kidney stones. A lot of pain, surgical procedures and time down. Had my turn around day Friday 7/16. That being said I have a lot of catching up to due. One good thing became of of all this. "All liquid diet"= no pouch problems. No doubt that will start up in the very near future.
@Sher I did not know you already had a pouch. If you need a surgeon for a pouch redo surgery, then you should go to Remzi at NYU. If you need a GI for your pouch, then my recommendation of Mt Sinai stands.

Your welcome, hope everything works out.
