I never had any problems with gas when I was healthy or when I was sick with UC but now it seems I am always struggling with it and it is so uncomfortable, embarrassing, and my abdomen can get so tight and round it is very painful. And, plus, there is the added complication of running to the bathroom more often only to get there and just be able to pass minimal stool and mostly gas. It is so time consuming and frustrating. Does anyone have advice on practices, products, or magical chants that have been helpful with this problem? From posts I've been reading I know others suffer with this problem too. Personally, I try to do all the standard things: avoiding gassy foods, eating and chewing slowly with my mouth closed, getting lots of exercise, taking GasX, and blah, blah, blah. Nothing seems to reliably solve the problem. Are there better products or foods that I have not heard of that would treat this issue? Do you know any good tricks?? I really long for relief and a plan for how to cope with this in the years ahead. What things have been the most successful for you?)
Thank you. Savannah in Mpls. MN

What is SIBO? I am trying to tweek my diet. I eat fish, chicken, yogurt, and light whole wheat bread. Just a few fruits-bananas and apples. One cup of coffee with cream and sugar. That's about it plus a little dark chocolate. I am going to try juicing vegetables. I tend to drift a bit to the underweight side. Does this sound gas producing?

SIBO is bacterial overgrowth. Most people with it find decreasing refined (and other, like fruit) sugars in their diet helpful.

Bacteria like sugar, and increase in its presence, creating excess gas. It can be a possibility for pouchers with your symptoms. Dietary changes are all that are necessary to make the change. I don't follow it, but I'm sure others could chime in on good sites to go to for information.

If you have SIBO, what helps is reducing the stuff that fuels the bad bacteria in your gut, and that is not just sugar. If you have it bad, it is treated with antibiotics along with strict dietary modifications. What has worked for me is xifaxan AND a strict low FODMAP diet.

Also with you saying you are underweight.. is another SIBOish sign. What happens when SIBO is bad is that the bad bacteria take over and prevent absorption of proper nutrition.

There is a breath test for SIBO, but it seems most docs don't bother with that, instead they give you a round of antibiotics and if it helps.. then it is SIBO.

You can use the search function on this board to find out more about it. But also a lot of people on this board have simply gone to a lower carb, wheat free, low sugar diet with some success over symptoms without even being diagnosed.

Thanks so much to everyone for the advice about SIBO and for the suggestion to try a FODMAP diet. I don't know if I can stick with such a diet as it seems so restrictive but I can be aware of low and high FODMAP foods and try to avoid as many of the highs as possible (for me). I do think I eat too much sugar. I feel deprived of the various fruits and veggies I love and then eat dark chocolate and chips which is not very healthy. At least I eat no fast food, red meat, fried foods, pastries and other crummy stuff like that. Still learning.
