What do y'all use to prevent gas that is produced in the intestines? Any meds work? Of those that work, do you experience side effects?
I'm interested in reducing the urgency that gas causes, not gas pains in the upper GI.

Hey Sara,
I use gasx (generic from Amazon) after every meal and at bedtime
it eliminates 95% of my gas
no side effects!
Hey Bark Less, will you send me a link to the one you buy on amazon? I appreciate your feedback! I will try it. I thought that Gas-X just combined the bubbles, didn't actually prevent gas. Ever since I got UC, it's been a farty party over here. With the j-pouch, the party continued.
Yes I will dm it to you later on.
early on, I read and thought the same, and did not try it for a long time. But then I figured what the heck, and gave it a shot, and got good results from it. I guess everyone is different so YMMV.
Right, can't hurt to try! I'll let post if it worked or not just in case anyone else is interested.
For me, Pepto Bismol spells utter destruction to gas. It kills everything that causes gas. It's got bismuth in it, a metal that is toxic to bacteria in your gut. When used judiciously, it's extremely effective for treating gas and diarrhea and pouchitis short-term.

Curious about what "used judiciously" might look like?

What I meant was overuse takes its toll on your liver. The Bismuth Salicylate is a toxic metal and if you take more than the maximum dosage recommended for a long period of time, you could end up with liver issues, just like alcoholics and drug addicts who overload their livers with toxins end up with liver issues. I don't have chronic gas issues, but when I have really uncomfortable gas, PB works like a charm. If you have good results and have to take it regularly I would speak to your doctor.
In the past, for stubborn pouchitis (which often produced gas and cramps) I did take max dosage PB for 3-5 days.

Thank you for the clarification. Very helpful!
Sometimes PB can turn stools dark coloured, almost black looking. Don't panic.
Ha ha ok! I'm not really ready to try PB. My interest in the gas prevention is casual, so I'm just trying different things. The internet says Ginger, Chamomile, Dill, Fennel, Basil, Caraway, Cumin, Parsley, and Peppermint are good for reducing gas, but they may be referring to reducing gas pains in the upper GI. I'd be most interested in something more along those lines, but I would definitely try a mild medication. I tried a low dose of the stuff that's in gas-x (took me a while to find one at the drugstore without sorbitol) before bed last night. It made me feel a little nauseated but otherwise I didn't notice anything. I will have to try it during the day sometime. That's when the gas is the most noticeable: while my guts are churning and digesting. Usually I'm done with that by bed time.
Generic gas-x works for me.

Which generic gas-x do you get? Thanks!

I'm in Texas and go to an HEB grocery store. It's an HEB generic.

I'm in Texas, too! I'll check out the HEB. The CVS had a very limited selection. I don't want the chewable kind. Hope HEB is better!
Do you have a good j-pouch doctor you see? I'm in Central Texas.
