I have recently been having a problem with bloating and gas. I know we all have the gas problem but the problem I am having is with passing the gas. It just seems to want to hang around and roll in my tummy. I have been taking gas-x which usually helps but not doing much this time around. Has anyone tried anything else that may help?

Hi Chayes- I started taking Beano before I eat any meal and it has helped. In a past thread member Since1991 recommended Now Super Enzymes brand that helps aid in digestion and reduce bloating. I bought some off Amazon and it has helped me tremendously with gas and bloating. Finally, if I start to feel the gas or bloating at work, I take a walk and that helps minimize it (works it out). I feel for you because I know how cumbersome and painful it can be! Kara
I don't know why the gas is getting trapped, but sometimes increased gas suggests SIBO. If it turns out to be SIBO, a couple of months of an antibiotic like doxycycline may be needed.
Hi Scott,
How is SIBO detected or tested for? I am about 10-11 weeks post op and have been dealing with some nasty gas. I do have a follow up appt with my GI doc on Monday and I want to make sure I tell him the right things.
Thanks,
Steve
Hi Steve
you may find it useful to look into the low FODMAP diet (Monash university). It offers guidance around eliminating foods that are hard to break down and so ferment in the gut creating extra gas. Good evidence for its efficacy and it's increasingly being recommended by doctors in treating IBS . It helped me a lot. I didn't take any antibiotics for SIBO (they caused all my problems in the first place) and I didn't bother with breath testing but the diet and a probiotic seemed to help massively,
good luck!
Shaney, I'm late in replying, so by now you've found out what your doctor likes to do. SIBO is sometimes diagnosed with a breath test, and sometimes just treated based on symptoms. How did your visit turn out?
Hi from Oz, just had the breath test for SIBO proved positive, been getting alot of gas pain. GP gave me Clindamycin capsules 150mg for 2 weeks but said it may need repeating. She said the recommended antibiotic was way too expensive so gave me that one. The pharmacist then insisted I take probiotics too. Just read should only take it at a weaker strength and work up to higher dose. All this is very confusing some say take it some say don"t take it. Also due to have a hernia op soon, any info would be appreciated.Good luck to you trying to sort all this out and hope it works out for you

Hi, everyone thanks for the input. I went to see my GI dr and he put me on 2 antibiotics and an anti inflammatory, seems to be helping. I did ask about taking something to prevent gas and he suggested to continue the gas ex and take 20 mins before eating. To help keep down the gas.
Hi Chayes, Do you mind telling me the name of the antibiotics you were given?
Thanks Heather
Rifaximin is the expensive one usually used for SIBO... it's much safer than the others too
