Biopines came back chronic pouchitis at the top and bottom of my pouch. Why does chronic pouchitis cause gas and bloated? I get to a point where I can't even eat, distend very badly and dry heave? My meds are no longer working. The GI says my pouch is dysfunctional. I have trapped gas. I can feel this angry gas wishing around continually.  I just don't understand why pouchitis does this? They also think I might have some adhesions but the chronic pouchitis now is a concern. Forgeting the adhesions, would a ostomy restore my health? I  think the GI would like to have the surgeon do this on Thursday when he does the exploratory

Bacterial proliferation leads to excess gas. Bacteria produce gas as a byproduct of their activity. Inflammation also narrows the passages (just like with asthma restricting breathing). Adhesions just add to the mess. The small intestine does not stretch under pressure from gas as easily or as much as the colon, so you get more pain, cramps, urgency, etc.

Makes perfect sense to me. But what surprised me was how widespread these abdominal symptoms were for me. Could have sworn ther was gallbladder or pancreas involvement, but nope!

I consider myself a lifelong learner...

Thank you Jan but honesty no one knows what to do. Do they give me an ostomy? Since the inflammation is not controlled? It's scaring being in no mans land now. Waiting for surgeon office to call. Still on surgical schedule for Thursday but they would like more of a plan. Duh, it's been three weeks, they still can't figure things out. It's not like I'm with some hick hospital but with one of the best surgeons and GI teams in the country. The GI team said there is nothing more medically they can do for me. I got this surgery to be well and have nothing but issues and some strange ones as that.

Allycat,

i feel ya. I to have not found relief having the pouch. I have had pouchitis from day one. you know when you get gas down there. I call it the bowling ball in the butt feeling. If I'm laying down its easier to pass the gas. But it never wants to come out standing up or fear if it does stool might come out. I am considering going to an end illiostomy. I don't understand how others have no problems and we do. I read that 10% pouches fail. I personally think that number is higher. I'll keep you in my prayers as you deal with this decision.

Halo, like had emergengy surgery 3 weeks ago and now have a loop ileostomy. My pouch just gave out . 15 years, I knew it was coming. The meds all stopped working.

I think as time goes on we will see a lot more reversals Unfortunately. This was never discussed 15 years ago, it was to be for life. It was a tease.

Try and save your pouch. Going back to a ostomy is not easy and I'm not sure but in order to have a end Ileo you need pouch removal? Scary Scary surgery in my mind. The recovery just for Being diverted is a killer! I hope I don't need more. I'm getting too old for all this.
