Hello. I had my J pouch surgery 13 years ago and I really appreciate all the information and support the J-Pouch Group provides. I have now been diagnosed with Biliary Dyskonesia (malfunctioning Gallbladder). I have surgery scheduled for Thursday the 20th to remove my gallbladder and I am concerned about how this will affect my system. I have done pretty well with my J-Pouch. I eat 4-5 small meals a day and I go 7-8 times a day (never at night). I have had some problems with not getting enough salt (hydration) but not serious.

If you have had your gallbladder removed, can you tell me about your experience?

My questions are:

Did your bowel movements increased? Permanently?
Have you had more irritation?
Have you had more dehydration?
have you experienced any vitamin deficiencies (such as A,D,E,K)?
Did you gallbladder pain go away?
Has your diet changed?
Are GB problems common for J-Pouchers?

Thanks for your help!

I don't believe you should have ant issues at all. The gallbladder is in no way a major organ. Its like the livers sidekick to store bile. Our bodies can function without it no problem. My surgeon actually decided to just remove my gallbladder during my surgeries so I wouldn't have any future issues. It should be a piece of cake operation and I doubt will make much of a difference to the way your jpouch is currently functioning. When we were put together we probably could have been put together without a gallbladder and everything would of been fine. The only time the gallbladder is ever mentioned is when its causing problems and needs to come out. Good luck my friend. You'll be fine I'm sure.
I had my gallbladder out way before my j-pouch surgery and I've never had any problems. I think you'll find (hopefully) that you'll do very well with it gone.

Did your bowel movements increased? Permanently? No way to tell.
Have you had more irritation? Same, no way to tell.
Have you had more dehydration? I never get dehydrated.
have you experienced any vitamin deficiencies (such as A,D,E,K)? I had a Vitamin deficiency but I think many people do, whether or not they have a gallbladder and a colon. No other deficiencies.
Did you gallbladder pain go away? Yes! Absolutely! And that pain was horrid!
Has your diet changed? Nope. I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian and I eat whatever I want.
Are GB problems common for J-Pouchers? I'm not sure. Mine happened before j-pouch surgery so I have no idea if there's a link or not. Others have had surgery after j-pouch.

I had my gall bladder removed 7 years before my j pouch surgery. After is was removed I noticed no difference in anything except the pain was gone of course that the bad gall bladder was causing. Then several years later came my UC diagnosis. I wouldn't worry about it too much. The gall bladder is pretty much a useless organ. Good luck!
I had mine out 12 months ago through laporoscopy and inspite of the size of my galbladder (1kg, a record for France) they had no problem removing it at all and other than a few stray adhesions that he took advantage to snip, all went great...I recovered like I did from all the other laporoscopies...bloated with tons of gas for a few days, a bit of discomfort (tylenol was enough) and then...surprise! The pain was gone. No more nausea, no more feeling like there was a knife in my back or shoulder pain like I was having a heart attack...I only felt relief and wondered why I had waited so long to have it removed.
Since then no negative side effects, no change in pouch function or adverse reactions to foods...less gas, less discomfort and less idigestion.
All good.

Yeah I remember that back pain from my gall bladder when it went bad. That was a weird pain because it would come and go in waves. It was instantly gone once they removed it and I remember feeling soooo much better. The recovery was easy from what I recall. I was back to work a week later. They removed it laparoscopically.
Grateful to everyone here for their guidance. One year from my take down and two days away from having gall bladder removed.

I've been doing well of late and quite worried about the possibility of terrible diarrhea that may never subside. Geez, some people have posted absolute nightmare stories. Great to know there are wonderful outcomes to focus on instead!

I have a wonderful surgeon...she's gotten me through the three colectomy/ileostomy surgeries, so I have nothing to fear there.
