Hi all
I am kind of freaking out right now. I took an imodium last night at around 9pm and have not really had a BM yet today. I had a little one at 8am and another just now but I really had to strain and push just to get a little out. I have pain in my upper abdomal and right side...pretty much my whole stomach area and I am worried. What should I do? Is it possible to be constipated with a Jpouch and can I be hurting myself? Thanks for any advice!

Definitely something imodium can cause. Don't take too many! One time I did and after eating a big stack of banana pancakes, did not move my bowels for about 12 hours which is very unusual. Also felt the "knotted up" sensation I got with blockages that happened right after the surgery.

I alleviated that obstruction by walking at a fast pace. After that I cut back on imodium. I noticed that compared to what other posters on this board have reported, I am quite sensitive to imodium. If I take more than 2 caps in any 12 hour period it is CONSTIPATION CITY for me. Usually 1 does the trick. I had taken 2 the night before and 2 the morning of the banana pancake episode.

What you need to do is find the minimum dosage that works and take no more. Imodium should not be popped like candy.

Certainly, any bowel slower can have this effect. As you can see, each of us has our own tolerance for everything from foods to medications. Was this the first time you took Imodium? Usually a single dose does not do this, but more often from over treating a case of diarrhea. So I would think that it is more likely that you had an adhesion related obstruction. But if this was your first time trying it and you took only one pill, it could be you are just very sensitive to it.

Ok so I am doing better. Had a BM just now and passed a LOT of gas so I think the worst is over. Stomach and near the ovaries is still painful but managable. I have taken imodium before, just after the surgery, and it did not do anything for me at all. Started taking it again a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to really slow things down a lot and I had the full feeling the next morning after a full nights sleep of 8 hours. That is with just one pill. I think you are right Jan and that I am just really sensitive. I only took pain meds for 2 days after my surgery because of the way I reacted to them and I rather deal with the pain than the side effects of the meds.
Not sure if I will try the imodium again. Is there another thing that will slow the bowels down a little ...tylenol? Only if I really have to. Right now I do not take anything at all, just probiotics twice a day. Oh one more question, what does pepto bismol do and what are the long term effects of using it?
Sorry for all the questions but I really appreciate everyone's input and this site has been invaluable.
