Hi everyone,

I had j pouch surgery on 30th August this year. I have had ulcerative colitis for over 5 years and last year I had my worse flare. I stayed in hospital for over three months and no medication was helping. I ended up have emergency surgery.

I decided to continue this year with another surgery to create the j pouch as I want to look and feel as normal as possible.

I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help with. I had my surgery in London which is a six hour journey from my home as this was the best hospital for this procedure. Therefore to see my surgeon is pretty difficult.

I recovered from surgery well. I had a key hole procedure and left the hospital 5 days after the procedure. Four weeks after the surgery (two weeks or so) I have a feeling of an ache in my rectum and feel like I constantly need to do a poo. I have passed some mucas which I know is normal but is it right to feel like I need to be sitting on the toilet 24/7. The other thing I have noticed is my bladder feels full a lot of the time. I feel like I need to pee and usually when I pass urine I feel like I need to again?

I contacted the nurse at the hospital and she said these feelings are pretty normal after the huge operation that I have just had and that they will get better over time.

Does everyone agree? Is this normal and did anyone else have a similar experience. My take down is due to be 30 November 2015.

Thank you for any advice

Hi Zoe,

My experience was very similar to yours in terms of the constant feeling of needing to go. That lasted almost the whole time I had an ileostomy, about 11 weeks. I think the feeling came partially from mucus buildup, and partially from the psychological effects of having had UC for 7 years and constantly feeling like I had to go during that time.

I didn't have the other issue of having a full bladder all the time because I was struggling to stay hydrated. Wish I could offer something helpful here, but I'm afraid I can't for this one!

Best of luck!

Hi Zoe,

I won't be able to really help with the ileo part but when I had my k pouch created they left my colon in for 4 months and I had constant mucus build-up and (unfortunately) release...it was horrible...I would get cramps, a sudden need to run (kind of like before the surgery) and then the mucus would come out...But no relief...not until I had a fully functional pouch.

As for the urination...that, in my case was easy...I got an infection from the catheter (always do) and needed to have it treated...I had to pee constantly, including 2 secs after I had just peed...plus lower back pain and a bit of burning... morning and night a large glass of cranberry juice mixed with water (it is too strong for me otherwise)...if that doesn't do it then antibiotics.

Try a week of a lot of fluids plus the cranberry juice (unless you have a fever) and see how that goes.

Most of this is probably normal but if you have a fever, start vomitting or have chills or start shaking then call your doctor immediately.

Things are all pretty swollen in there too and need time to settle down a bit...it can take months to get back to normal (by then you will probably be hooked up) so give it time, drink lots of fluids and take it easy.

Hi Sharon,

Thank you very much for tor reply and experience. I thought it could be a water infection but I don't seem to have any other symptoms.

I will do as you said and try the cranberry juice for a few days to see if that changes anything.

I am looking forward to take down. I know it won't be easy but I am looking forward to feeling more normal

I hope you stay well and thank you again.
