Before my J pouch, I was fearful of urgency, especially as I'd become used to the use of a colostomy bag.

Today, whilst out shopping, I felt the sensation to use the toilet, yeah a BM, but I decided to persevere and hold off, until my shopping trip was over.

Although a little scary and somewhat uncomfortable, there didn't appear to be feelings or a fear of incontinence, nor did I feel the need to rush around, which would of made it worse.

Once I arrived back and within comfortable surroundings, I was able to unpack the shopping  before I finally got to use the toilet; yeah, a huge relief.

I was able to resist the sensation/urge and hold off, something I certainly wasnt able to do when experiencing a UC flare up.

Maybe it's members of this forum who don't experience urgency who are lucky.

One of my biggest fears before my J pouch was urgency, especially when remembering what I'd gone through during UC flare ups and the bouts of urgency and accidents even when not suffering from a flare up.

For maybe 6 months prior to my J pouch creation, whilst still deciding whether to have a J pouch or not; I met many a patient who had undergone successful J pouch surgery and they all made assurances that urgency was never an issue, stating that once they felt the urge or sensation to go, they were able complete thier meal, Journey, wait to the end of a movie etc.

It was statements such as this and resssurances from this forum which helped me come to the decision to go ahead with J pouch Surgery.

Through-out my visits to Hospital specialising solely in colorectal surgery; I met many patients who had undergone successful J pouch surgery, albeit within early stages and they too had reservations in regard to urgency.

Since takedown, it's the first time I've had to hold off and resist the urge and I wanted to share my experience with those who are fearful or urgency prior to j pouch surgery.

Opting for the J pouch is the biggest decision I've ever had to make and no matter what the future holds, what I'm experiencing right now can't be taken away.
