For the past 14 years I took 6-8 Lomotil and 1 Cipro (250mg) a day.  Never had an issue.  A month ago I ended up in the ER and 3 days in the hospital with severe pouchitis to where I was getting constriction above my pouch.

I took Flagyl for 7 days, felt absolutely the best I've felt in years, but then three days later extremely sick again.

I'm went back on Flagyl for a week and this time I got a refill for another 7 days. (I'm paranoid it coming back).  Feel much better.

QUESTION:  I never took Flagyl before and I am noticing som may be taking this as a maintenance Rx.  Is this true?  Should I talk to my Dr. about something like this?  I checked drugs.com for side effects but I'm curious what others notice long term.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

I take both Cipro and Flagyl every day, and have for several years. Cipro alone stopped working for me, and Flagyl alone never helped, but in my case the combination, in a low dose once daily, does the trick. If Flagyl alone worked I'd be using that. Side effects re minimal for me.

I believe that a pretty high dose of VSL #3 DS also helps me.

I have taken 500 mg of Flagyl, 500 mg of Cipro and Lomotil 2x per day for the last 14 years.  I don't have any side effects, but have been told to watch for tingling in hands/feet, as Flagyl is known to cause nerve damage in some.  I tried going off of the Flagyl a couple of times, but regretted it (pouchitis symptoms came back).

Hope this helps

Personally, I think it is far better to rotate different antibiotics, or "pulse" dose (where you alternate off and on antibiotics). Some are lucky and avoid side effects and bacterial resistance, but the risks are still there. I did OK on antibiotics, but still had significant pouchitis evident on endoscopy. I am now on Remicade and Imuran, which my GI prefers to constant antibiotics.

Still, if I was doing perfectly on reasonable doses of antibiotics, I'd stick with that until problems arose.
