Today I received great news!!!I don't have a fistula which was quite surprising to me? I asked my surgeon how long the setons stay in. I had surgery a week ago today and woke up with a seton and the old abscess draining again. However today he said no you don't have a fistula but the wound was not healing properly and he feels the seton will stop it from filling and cycling maybe after a few months it will come out..I was thrilled and confused I guess I heard or assumed something different.. No more packing its healing nicely..My anxiety and mental health has been tested.. I feel like I can breath again and start enjoying my life and family again(: Has anyone else had setons in for non healing abscesses and not fistulas?

Thanks ladies.. I know Rachel.. I am really confused to I was hoping someone would have a similar situation.. He used 2 setons through the old abscess on the left side it's looped and tied..I asked him how long the seton would stay in for the fistula.. He said you don't have a fistula but he wanted to stop any abscess from forming again.I do trust him and he has been extremely good with me..I have tried to find some information on the Internet and haven't..I see him on Tuesday again and will ask him to explain it a little more..my bowels are moving fine and I am taking up to 4 baths a day.. Also my MRI was not conclusive to a fistula.. It showed inflammation and that's why he wanted to do the eua.
no matter where he is putting it, he is basically putting in a DRAIN to keep the abscess open so it can heal. you need that. It is fortunate that the abscess is small enough that you only require a seton. But you need the thing to stay open and draining. simple as that.
no worries for you now gina. Just let the thing do its course and hope that is continues to drain and heal.
best wishes
Well My happy moment was short lived..I just got back from emergency after gushing blood poured out of me.. A very scary moment with my poor daughters in the room..I wasn't sure if I was bleeding from my rectum.. Lucky me my surgeon was still at the hospital and saw me.. My rectum was fine and my seton surgery was fine blood work came back pristine( doctors word). He gave me IV fluids and gravol.. I'm home now feeling better and ill see him Tuesday..Rachel my seton is definitely on the side like a shoelace knot. What a crazy ride I'm on!!!
I had my weekly doctors appt. today I have had random bleeding at least once a week.. I have stopped my heating pad and the last episode was a lot less bleeding..I guess the seton gets irritated because of its location and cuts my skin. My doctor said all looked good and clean and this minor set back will heal itself.. I feel good better than I have felt in months.
On another note I have a 16 year old who is now going through some issues and is being tested for celiac disease. She has lower back pain lower abdominal pain always tired and sleepy and low energy. She has beta thalassemia from her dad and we were told she was anemic however hematologist said blood says she is not anemic..Her ferritin is extremely low.My worse fear are my kids having my issues. Any advice would be appreciated!!
