Had my j-pouch built last Monday, in a second of three steps surgery. Everything went very well according the enthusiastic words of my surgeon. Unfortunately, just about 24 hours (tuesday) after, i developed a quite discomfortable fever (38.9 c); which was treated through antipiretics and antibiotics, but it came back the same the following day. Yesterday I was happy as had no fever, bu today, again the same condition. The surgeon and his equipe seem confused, as they put me on several blood tests, and all appeared very good. It seems I'm healthy, they are not much worryed, but I am, now there's the weekend and the main surgeons will be out. What am I risking? I am afraid of fatal infection, cancer or pouch failure with permanent ostomy, and so sad as when everything seemed good I got that. Please give me honest opinions...

Try not to worry too much. Post op fevers are very common. Once they rule out the typical causes, the three "W's" (wind, water, wound) by checking for respiratory, urinary tract, and wound infections, then it is assumed that it is idiopathic (meaning, no known cause). With time the fever should resolve.

It is possible that something may show up later on, but it is difficult to know at this point. I wound up with a pelvic abscess, but the fevers did not start until about two weeks post op and they were low grade, at first. I am sure that the staff filling in on the weekend will be keeping a close watch on you.

Jan, I forgot to mention that this morning they found some purulency on the wounds, and tried to treat them removing some stitch and squeezing to clean the suppuration onto. But the fever materialized in the afternoon anyway... Should I wait for more treatment to see resulta, as the doctor was quite sure the fever was caused by that.
