Sometimes when there is mucous in my unused j-pouch, I feel a sense of urgency, as if it's about to spill out unless I clamp down. Then when I go to the toilet, only a tiny bit dribbles out, and I then still feel like I have to go afterwards. (Other times, I don't feel it at all and am surprised when some drains out as I sit to urinate.) This worries me that these sensations might be even worse when there is a lot more passing through than just mucous. However, I have also read from a medical source that this sort of j-pouch drainage can sometimes be even more difficult to control than actual stool after takedown, partially because that portion of the intestine can get a little irritated/inflamed when it is left unused. I have had trace amounts of blood in my drainage the past couple of weeks, where before I did not. Am not concerned, as I know this is normal, but maybe it could be a sign of mild irritation?

I know that everything improves greatly over the first several months, so I'm not talking about the end-result here, more what I might be able to expect during recovery.

Any thoughts on the comparison of pre- vs. post- takedown urges and sensations?

My experience was that pre and post sensations were quite different, ie. pre was no indication of how post was going to be.

I remember the mucous being quite slippery, and just like you said, sometimes a fair amount, and sometimes a little.

After takedown, I remember having a spill of super liquid poop, literally water, in the hospital. Plus, discomfort from gas. But once I started eating, things improved greatly over the next few days.

I have a pretty poor memory in general, but I do know that post takedown, I felt more comfortable sitting than standing. When I was standing, I felt as though I had to permenantly clench to hold it in. Now I don't notice this. Either because of the healing process, or perhaps I now auto-clench, and don't notice! Regardless, there are no issues now.

Not sure if this is helpful or not! Smiler

EDIT: Just want to reiterate that post takedown, I had no control issues. My poop firmed up pretty nicely once I started eating in the hospital, so by the time I was home, control was very good. No accidents. There was definitely some adjustment to new sensations, but you get the hang of them pretty quick.
