Face tingling

Maybe it's like you hit on a nerve or something? Doesn't sound too troubling, though it sounds annoying.

Thanks Rachel...it's been almost a month, so I am hoping the worst is over. I thought is was irritated or inflamed nerves...but didn't know it would affect limbs and face!

Not that it's the same, but once my mom had a tooth filled, and the numb area on her lip stayed numb for a YEAR. Just this one area on her lip. The dentist just said the nerve was irritated, and it would take time to go away, and it did, but it took a long time.

Seems like spinal nerve root irritation. I have spinal stenosis, and get tingling and numbness that comes and goes. Took a spinal MRI to diagnose. There was no real treatment for it, other than to avoid aggravating positions.

I didn't get facial symptoms though, which would be a cranial nerve irritation. Were shingles and other infections ruled out? Your CT and Doppler studies would have ruled out tumor, stroke and compromised blood flow. Hopefully, it is just trauma from the broom handle. Makes sense, but I'd wonder about the extremity involvement.

Jan - would there be any specific treatment for either, or just wait for irritation to improve ?

If it is an infection, there'd be treatment. Otherwise, just watch and wait.

Could it be a pinched nerve? Or is it too general for that?
Could you consult a chiropractor just to check out your neck and base of your head?

Thanks Sharon...I've thought pinched nerve, irritated/inflamed nerve, everything under he sun. I have had to make myself stay off of Google sites, ....you know how that is. It is not as severe today, so hoping it straightens itself out sooner rather than later.

Have you ever heard of Bell's Plasy?
The face part reminds me of it...it is, if I am not wrong, the inflamation of a nerve (nerve root?) in the face but I don't know if it effects other parts of the body....

My GP called yesterday and because all CT and carotid scans came back normal, she doesn't know what is causing it. The tingling has diminished, but still there. She may want to refer me to a neurologist for MRI but said to let her know in a week if it is better or not. New year, new deductible and out of pockets...more $$$$. But if it is something, I need to know. So right now I wait. I think Bells Palsey causes your face to droop, mine isn't doing or done that.

Any chance that you're taking Flagyl? I get peripheral neuropathy with that sometimes, which results in tingling sensations in my hands and feet.

Thanks everyone....I'll Be having an MRI sometime soon. I went to a neurologist after trying to wait this out. He has ruled out MS and said it is probably left sided parathesia. He gave me Klonopin which has surprisingly taken care of the tingling. The drug does make me a little loopy though. The neurologist said it is probably stress related. Didn't think I was stressed, but will see what MRI shows, if anything.

Verdict is in....so they tell me. It is left sided parathesis. Could go away in a few months or a few years. Treatment is Klonopin, which surprisingly takes the tingling away, but I am loopy and run into walls or anything near me. I've tried half (.5) of a pill twice a day, I've tried a whole one at night and a sliver of a piece during the day. Anyone been on Klonopin daytime doseage and had unbalance? I look like a drunk for the first few hours after I get up in the a.m. Also, have very little appetite, but have gained a few pounds. ??
Was also told parathesis is fairly common. Also, hello to over $4000 in deductibles.

Paresthesias? Really? That is the diagnosis? Paresthesia is a symptom (like a cough is a symptom). It is just the medical term for tingling/numbness/pain. I suppose they were not able to determine the cause. If it becomes chronic or worsens, then the culprit may reveal itself.

I hope it is benign and self limiting, and resolves soon!

Jan- yes....all my scans and MRI came back clear. Diagnosed with anxiety which causes the condition. Should I pursue something else. Now I'm scared!

Well, if you're going to have a non-diagnosis, "not MS" is a decent one. In any case, the decision to search harder for a "true" diagnosis can be tricky. It depends on how well you can get things to work treating the symptoms. The search can be long, painful, expensive, unsuccessful, or even successful in finding a diagnosis for which no treatment exists. It's not like having a diagnosis means there's a cure! As Jan suggests, an elusive diagnosis may express itself over time (translation: it gets bad enough to be obvious). Fortunately, sometimes symptoms mysteriously disappear, which is definitely better than a diagnosis.

The unknown can be tricky to process, and it's tempting to imagine the worst-case scenario. It may help slightly to remember that doctors are pretty good at ruling out the worst-case scenarios, especially when they're treatable.

No, I think they were thorough, so you may as well save your money. Maybe cognitive therapy or simple relaxation techniques can help you reduce your need of the Klonopin.

The sneaky thing about anxiety/panic attacks is that once you are in that loop, you have anxiety about the anxiety.

Not sure how old you are, but I am going through a crazy ride with peri-menopause. Hormones can be a cause of anxiety and tingling sensations.

Just a thought since the doctors (thankfully) didn't really find anything seriously wrong with you.

Have you tried acupuncture?
My dad had a 'tick/twitch' in the right eye/face and no doctor could either diagnose it so he turned to acupuncture. It worked quite well stimulating the facial nerves and stopping it.
I later learned that being low in magnisium can facial/eye twitches so is tingling very far off?

Thanks everyone....I just turned 62, so past the peri menopause period. Haven't given acupuncture a thought!

I was prescribed acupuncture for my spinal stenosis induced paresthesias. I had high hopes, but it did nothing for me other tha provide for some relaxation. If it works, it is a great noninvasive approach.

I was out in the sun on Sat and Sun this weekend. It was beautiful out so I wore quite a bit of sunscreen.

Last night at bedtime, my cheeks and jawlines were tingling and itching. I just thought it was too much sun so I took a shower and went to bed. This morning, not only are they all still tingling and itching but both eyes are very very puffy and swollen. It honestly looks I was punched in The eye, which of course, I wasn't. The combination of all of it is news to me. Could it just be too much sun? My neck is itching right now.

Do we have a hard time with sun exposure when our body is still focusing it's efforts on healing? Any ideas? I'm worried that if I go back out in the sun, I will end up an itching. Tingling, swollen mess.

Please let me know what you think. I never hAd a reaction to sun she I had a colon.

I did have a couple of wine coolers or beers on the boat but I didn't overdo it since this was my first putting. I also took 2 Lomotil before going out. I hadnt taken them since my takedown. What do you think? Jan??

If the only medications you are taking are Norco and Tramadol, then it is not likely a drug photosensitivity. Based on your description, I'd suspect it was a reaction to the sunscreen. Even if you have used the sunscreen before, you could develop sensitivity to it. The sun exposure heightens the reaction.
