Hello J-pouchers and others. A lot of people have commented that extended release products have caused irritation to their j-pouch. Any idea what ingredient in the extended release products seems to be the culprit? And is "enteric coated" ever a problem in your experience? Thanks in advance for sharing!

Some folks have rapid transit times and report inadequate results with some extended release products. These products vary a lot, and are designed to release at different parts of the GI tract, so it seems like a mistake to lump them all together. My extended release acid reducer works just fine, at least in my body. Enteric coatings are ancient history by the time any remnant of the pill reaches the J-pouch.
While I generally agree with Scott on this, my experience tells me different.
A UTI drug called mybetriq er, wrecked my pouch for months.
and SloFe which an release iron supplement caused pouch distress the several times i tried it post colectomy.
while its probably very individualized, it’s just easier for me to avoid er medications.

Yes, this is what I was wondering about and I appreciate your comment as well! Are these drugs sustained release, delayed release, or enteric coated?
I don’t know if enteric coated is part of it, but the mybetriq definitely is listed as er.
the SloFe description is slow release to avoid GI issues. It worked fine pre colectomy.
not so good post colectomy.
I've had problems with meds that weren't extended release also. Pristique came out exactly the way it went in (lol). Even fished it out to be certain and it was still a perfectly formed pill! I stay away from any meds that have any coating on them at all. I usually ask the Dr or Pharmacy for meds that are meant to be dissolved in the stomach. I've found that capsules work well for me as they dissolve allowing the medicine to be easily absorbed.
Thank you. Good information. Right now I'm going down an autoimmune disease research path. I wish the medical system had come to a conclusion about whether UC was AI or something else. Guess it's not important enough? Or maybe it's sometimes AI and sometimes not?
