So sorry for your husband Worried Wife,
It is not an easy surgery nor is it a simple one because they are working on 2 sites...the abdominal part where they create the stoma is not a huge surgery but still not simple...is he getting a loop or end ileo? The first steps with a stoma and bag are never easy but he should feel much better very quickly...if they are removing the j pouch it is because he is having reccurent problems...which will quickly dissapear once the pouch is gone so that is a good thing...as for the anal closure...he will have a drain of sorts down there and it is very uncomfortable but not painful after a while...you can buy him a doughnut shaped inflatable cushion to sit on, it will help a bit, but mostly it just has to pass...keep him comfortable and be there for him...and from your post I know that you will be...the rest is just healing time and patience.

Thanks Sharon ,he already has an end ileostomy and the pouch has been defunct for 18 months .he has to have pouch removed and also a false anal sphincter removed too and some hernia repairs .the pouch never really worked for him and even now with the Stoma he has major leakage from the pouch all the time ,his life quality is very poor and he feels at 66 he wants some quality of life for a while his surgeon has always been reluctant to remove pouch as he never put it in and also he hadn't had much experience ,but now he has removed many and says he is willing and prepared to do this for my husband hopefully his wait won't be too long now ,any advise is much appreciated thankyou ,cathy

I just had my jpouch removed, anus closed up and perm end ileo Oct 17th - doing pretty well actually. I had asked my surgeon about keeping the jpouch in, but she said people run into problems down the road so it's best to remove it ASAP.

I was most worried about the anal closure. I didn't have any drains in the butt area, and I was closed up down there with dissolvable sutures on the outside. For the first week I didn't feel any pain or discomfort with the butt sutures at all. After a bit I could feel them if I moved a certain way, and when they start to get a bit dry, they tend to pull. I have a nurse come to my home daily, she helps clean down there in the morning, and I do it myself at night. I just saw my surgeon a few days ago, the wound is healing great and the sutures will dissolve when they are ready. At this point, I can barely tell they are there.

He will want to sit on soft surfaces, nothing that will pull the butt cheeks apart. I just sit on a pillow or soft couch and I've been ok.

You may want to post this in the ostomy section as many members there have had their pouch removed and anus closed.

Best of luck to you and your husband.

Hello my name is Pamela I'm from London I've had my J pouch for 15 months now, and after several complications my surgeon has decided to remove my pouch, close my bottom and give me a permanent stoma, I'm a little worried about the surgery I was in a lot of pain after my sub total colectomy and when they went to reverse it with the pouch, the first pouch died and I could not have a two stage procedure and it was done in one I was in intensive care for a while and the recovery was slow, can anyone enlighten me as to how the pain and recover is? Please.

I had my Jpouch removed in March of this year. I was in the hospital maybe 5 days, no worse abdominal pain than any of the prior surgeries. My rear end was a little tender sitting, I was just careful on how I sat down. My doctor told me to take off 6 weeks for work and I was like, Yeah right! I was back to work after 2 weeks but my job doesn't require heavy lifting, I do a lot of sitting and thats all I was doing at home so I figured why not work? I feel fantastic now and don't look back, I havent felt this good since before I was diagnosed w/Crohns at 19. Everyone is different tho on how the surgery and recovery go, mine seemed like a cake walk compared to many. I had my pouch removed at Johns Hopkins by Dr. Efron and his team were fabulous! Good luck!

Hi pamela, where did you have your jpouch surgery I see you live in London ,we live in west Yorkshire ,but originally from middx.
My husband has had his jpouch for aprox 15years and it has never worked properly ,it is disconnected at the moment and he has an end ileostomy ,but the pouch still causes him many problems so heis waiting to go in and have it removed in Leeds. Hope you get sorted too.
