What can a person do about gas all of the time?

Beyond watching what you eat, I take gasx after every meal and at bedtime.
it does not eliminate gas, but breaks it up so bloating is minimized and it passes easier. It relieves me of the explosive farts I used to have.
I’m sure others will suggest other alternatives, but it’s just something I have to live with and manage (like pretty much everything associated with my pouch)
Sometimes gut surgery can screw up our body's ability to make digestive enzymes. It's pretty common.
Dietary enzymes can help. I have noticed that "Beano" (I get the generic kind because it doesn't have sugar) helps with beans and cruciferous things, "Plant Enzymes" from "Now" help me with fat and grains, "Fodzyme" helps with Fructan (and milk and beans). These enzymes also help me get more energy from my food and I feel less bloated.
Sometimes probiotics help too.
I second gas-x and beano. Are you currently flaring?
A lot of people on here say they take Gas-X. It doesn't work in the least for me, it just makes me feel kind of gross.
When gas became a significant problem for me my doctor diagnosed SIBO. It’s often treated with doxycycline or Xifaxan.
Even without SIBO many of us can’t safely fart unless we’re on the toilet, so gas builds up and takes up space in the pouch. I’d suggest trying the recommendations above - if you do them one at a time you’ll be better able to tell what works for you.
I’ve had my pouch going on 7 years now and it still really bothers me. The fact that it gurgles and builds up and I can be in a meeting by with someone across my desk, and I have to play it off like I’m hungry or just ignore it. It’s embarrassing.
The worst is that it wakes me up starting around 4/5am, and then continues until I get up. It’s horrible. It sometimes is so loud my husband can hear it and it wakes him up too. If anyone has tips, I’ll take them. I do a gas ex with dinner every night but no difference. Still waking them bc I got a huge bottle a month or two ago and figure why not use them up.
I had AWFUL gas for the first 4 months. I think I have a post about it lmao. I'm talking about 100+ 2-5 second long farts a DAY.
Low dose probiotics, a low fiber diet, and 2 pills 2x daily of heather's tummy tamers, 2x beano with every meal, and 1 extra strength gas x with every meal, have solved most of it for me! It took a LOT of trial and error.
Here were the list of things that I tried before I figured out what worked for me:
- Blood work
- Pouchoscopy
- Low FODMAP (didn't work for me)
- Eliminating gluten and dairy (didn't work for me)
- Low fiber
- High dose probiotics (didn't work for me)
- Low dose probiotics (I use Jarrow foods)
- Cipro (didn't work for me)
- Xifaxin (didn't work for me)
- Azithromycin (only worked when I had e. coli)
- Beano
- Gas x
- IBGuard
- Heather's Tummy Tamers
- Metamucil (didn't work for me)
- Konsyl (didn't work for me)
- Upping my sodium and potassium intake
- Cutting out all raw fruits and veggies
- Cutting out probiotic/prebiotic foods
- Reducing my fat intake (then upping it again)
- Cutting out sugar alcohols
- Cutting out caffeine
- No more drinking straws
- No more gulping water
- Vitamin C
- No drinking water after meals for about 90 minutes
- Limit water with meals to 6oz or less
- Stay up right at least an hour after eating (preferably 2)
I know it's a lot! The j-pouch is a finicky beast.
Hey @nocolonstillrollingbb,
Can you tell me more about "Heather's Tummy Tamers"? They have a lot of products. Which ones do you take? Also what do they help with and how often do you take them?
Thanks!
