My son in in the hospital having J pouch surgery. 2nd of 3 planned surgery’s for uncontrolled UC. His surgeon is a genius but zero communication bedside manner and he is very stressed about excessive bleeding. Drain pouch is not working but blood pours out of drain incision and out of rectum. Like crime seen amounts of blood. Has anyone had similar experiences? Does this subside or is it a bad sign of success in J pouch? Doc says his hemoglobin drip from 15 to 10 so far is ok and wait for bleeding to stop. Can anyone with similar experience share their story? Why is blood coming from rectum it is not operational yet?

Definitely not normal. What are they doing to stop it??
Yes. I had the bleeding from the rectum. I also had severe spasms that were a 10 on the pain scale. Took about 3 weeks to fully subside the bleeding. When the bleeding stopped I had discharge. The spasming lessened in frequency but not on pain scale. That continued until I had my third step.
I just celebrated my 3rd surgiversary and feel completely normal and totally happy. It took 18 mos for my pouch to decide to settle down and boy am I happy I was patient. For 18 mos o went through so much and then magically - I am how I am!
Well the bleeding finally stopped. It was pretty scary for awhile. He will get released today. My son had one of those muscle spasm episodes that he also described as a “10”. So is it small intestine spasms? Any treatment to stop them?
Im not sure where the spasms were from - I was on pain pills, and they didn't put a dent in the pain level. I could not go back to work because of them.
If the spasms persist it may be worth trying Bentyl or Levsin to manage them.
Scott! Thanks for reminding me. I did take those but they didn’t work. But great recommendation. Definitely try those if it persists!
Thanks to both of you for your input. He is home from hospital now. Looks like JP drain is trying to become infected. I will be glad when he is well and complete.
