My son just had his step 2 surgery and now has loop ileo.  With the end ileo he was emptying his bag only 3-4 times per day.  Now with the loop he needs to empty it 7-8 times per day.  Is this typical?  Is this due to less "pipe".  He is only 2 weeks post op, so maybe it will decrease?  Is this any indication of how many BMs he will have post takedown?

Hi Momma, I don't know the specifics of why (others on here are very adept at the explanation) but, yes, the loop is more difficult to manage. More emptying, more liquid output. No, this is not an indication of the results your son will have after his takedown. Having said that, he will most likely initially use the bathroom a good amount after takedown because his jpouch will need time to expand and hold more. Over time, the number of bms will decrease. Hang in there!

I have an end ileo.  I empty 8 to 10 times a day.  But what it depends on is how often I eat.  If I eat a big meal I am guaranteed to have to empty at least three times starting about an hour after eating.  If I eat light.... Boy... I could go half the day without an empty.  But... ... I sure do enjoy eating anything I want again... That's the good part.  Well one of em.  I could go on but I won't.

Hopefully he won't have it long enough as said above.

All depends on your eating habits and I am sure it is the same with a loop.  I had one of those too for a short time.  That thing was nothing but trouble.  I had three blockages in that short time.

But having both I see output has been mostly liquid.  The end still depends on what I eat.  Of course.  I had tostadas today and piled the cheese on.  Well that slowed it way down and made it noticeably very thick.  All evening.

Question.... Are all loops temporary?

I cannot imagine a permanent loop ileo.

My end ileo is no problem.  As for blockages.  Very forgiving let's say.

Richard.
