Hi everyone,

I’ve got a bit of a scientific question regarding consumption of alcohol and the jpouch.  Does your blood alcohol content or BAC get effected at all by having a jpouch and no large colon?  Is there any extra stress put on your system without the large colon absorbing any of the byproduct of alcohol or as the large intestine normal absorbs water, does this raise the BAC level due to the lack of hydration normally created by the large intestine.

Any help would be great.

I think it’s a fascinating question as well but empirically haven’t noticed any difference in my tolerance of alcohol pre and post J Pouch. I am mindful to hydrate carefully, especially if it’s warmer weather where I am drinking. It would actually be cool if in theory a J Poucher could drink less and get drunk faster as it would enable more efficient alcohol consumption and require less money be spent on drinks to achieve the desired result. Just haven’t noticed any difference and I definitely can drink my coloned girlfriend under any table. On Easter Sunday we were drinking the same quantity of mimosas (bottomless) and I practically had to carry her into my condo after driving us home from our Easter brunch.

Alcohol doesn't make it to the colon anyway.  95% is absorbed through stomach and small intestine, sine of the nastier by products make it through to be excreted.  Dehydration can be an issue, but mix in a couple of soft drinks and you should be fine. The bigger issue is going to be the amount of sugar or sweetneer you are taking in, as that can have a laxative effect on us.

The best drink is probally hard clean spirits, i.e unflavoured good quality whisky, vodka, rum, gin.  Beer is ok for me, but I've only ever managed to drink around 2 pints or 5 bottles before I get bloated/bored. I've like rum and ginger but sugar is an issue then.. mixing sugar and sugar free mixers  (alternately) shoulds help you last the night.

Recommend considering that a treat night though, not regular, and look after yourself well for a few days after (hydration and healthy diet).  If your unwell before the night don't do it. No sense it making yourself worse

Maybe it's my age (77) but over the years.....since having my J-pouch created/hooked up when I was 62........my tolerance for alcohol has changed.  I used to be a two martini gal.  I'm now a one martini gal.  I have to admit, however, I may be pouring doubles when I used to pour singles.  I'm just thrilled to be able to enjoy an adult beverage when I want one!  Best wishes!
