Hey all, I'm having a small problem with the skin around my temp stoma.

First of all, I need to say that Eakin seals are AMAZING!!! When the nurse switched me to them, the raw area around my stoma disappeared within 2 days; it was great! No leakage issues, no pulling, no problems with adhesion.

The problem now is: my stoma has shrunk again, and the diameter is quite small. The hole in the middle of the seal is actually too big, leaving an area of exposed skin. Adding in that, in typical loop stoma fashion, the stoma is tipped sideways with the hole very close to my abdomen, and this is starting to cause rawness again.

I just checked the Eakin.eu website and it doesn't seem that the inner hole comes in any smaller sizes. Can/Should I fill in around the base with paste? I've always been told NOT to use paste with the seals...

If anyone has any experience with this, I'd appreciate hearing it.

Thanks,
Gin

Hi GinLyn

I love the Eakin seals as well! You can actually tear the eakin seal and then overlap the edges to get the fit you need, or if there is too much extra just tear a bit off and keep it for another use.

My stoma is kind of lopsided as well, and I use light convexity flanges which work like a charm to push my skin away from my stoma, and keeps my skin nice and healthy. Do you use a flat or convex wafer?
Oh, good, I was wondering about that! I'll try that at the next change.

I use Marlen one-piece convex appliances; they've been working very well. This is my 4th stoma and I think I've tried every type available at one time or another! Each time a different appliance has worked better; thank God for stoma nurses.

Is yours permanent?

Awesome, awesome, awesome! Thanks for the cutting and moulding tip; it's working great. REALLY helpful!

I'm having to consider going to a perm ileo myself due to a stupid fistula and continuing low-grade infection. I have one last shot (should I choose to take it) to fix the stupid thing with a muscle graft. If that doesn't work, it'll be the ileo. Haven't decided yet whether to try or not. 11 surgeries in, I'm just so $#@% tired! BUT, on the other hand, my pouch is completely healthy, so I'm loathe to give it up.

Sigh. Decisions, decisions.

In any case, thanks again for the advice; it really helped!

Best,
Gin
