Not much information to go on...

Protect it from what? Typically, PPIs are used to reduce stomach acid to treat/prevent GERD and gastro/duodenitis or ulcers. But, some of us suffering from chronic caustic stools (butt burn) have seen improvement of symptoms by using PPIs. But, it is not a given. Also, if you use these drugs long term, you are at a higher risk for B-12 malabsorption (which we may already be at risk for). So, not a completely innocuous drug.

Personally, I am not into taking meds unless actually needed. I am not saying you don't need it, but maybe you need to ask your doc for more information.

I went from Protonix, to omeprazole (generic for Prilosec) to nothing at all, now. I remember my GI telling me that long tern use is not advised also due to an increased risk for developing stomach cancers. I do have more buttburn now, but I didnt have GERD, etc so I am able to eat, digest etc without these meds.

Cheers,

Mark
My experience with Nexium (Prilosec is almost identical chemically) was that it worked fine but was very, very difficult to stop. There is a rebound productions of stomach acid and reflux that is not to be believed. It damaged my teeth and made me miserable. I eventually weaned off of Nexium very, very gradually, after failing once, by increasing them time between doses by an hour per day over several weeks.

Having said all this, I'm back on Prilosec, though I'm not happy about it. Frowner It has nothing to do with my pouch, though.
