HI Folks! It has been awhile since I have been on. I recently moved to Florida from up North. Because I was in Boston, a trip to the CC always meant that I needed to hop a plane! There was not a K pouch surgeon in the New England area. Now that I am in FL, I am excited by the prospect that the BCIR docs are close by. I did look at the directory of surgeons posted on here...but saw that Dr. Greg Shore was no longer at the practice..... Does anyone know other docs at the St. Petersburg location? Also another question.....Can my K pouch be serviced by a BCIR doc? I would think they would be so similar....? Any thoughts, opinions or experiences would be appreciated. Not having any issues (knock on wood) currently, but just want to have my ducks in a row for the future. Flying to CC is not always feasible for me with 3 small kids and a limited budget.... Thanks!

Dr. Ernest Rehnke in St. Petersburg did my BCIR surgery two years ago and the results were excellent.  He is a highly skilled and compassionate surgeon who I can strongly recommend.  I believe he could treat problems that might arise with your k-pouch. The web site for his BCIR program is: www.bcir.com. There is a group of us with BCIR’s and k-pouches called Quality Life Association (www.qla-ostomy.org) that might be of interest to you.

Thanks guys for the info.... I am going to try to use Rhenke as a "go to". I am not sure if I should contact the office for the sake of "making contact" even though I don't need to see him yet. If it will help to be in the system in case of future problems, or if I should wait for a problem to arise, as I know some doctors won't put you in their computer system unless you actually come in for a visit. Also I may call to make sure my health insurance is compatible.... Even if I don't see your responses right away.... I always find my way back to this wonderful website and really appreciate anyone who takes the time to comment!

Rosie, I definitely recommend contacting Dr. Rehnke’s office to discuss what he can do for you if the need arises.  Those of us with k pouches and BCIR’s are members of a very exclusive “club” and would want to have a surgeon who specializes in these procedures for certain problems that might arise.  An emergency situation with your pouch is no time to have to go doctor hunting.  I might also mention that there is a non-profit group called Quality Life Association whose purpose is to support those with continent ileostomies and provide information on those procedures.  Their website is: www.qla-ostomy.org and they have a convention every other year in St. Petersburg, FL.

I would pop in to see him. Kristen is his assistant and really sweet. You can also go on www.bcir.com and use the message board. Susan Kay will answer you and she is one of the main go-to people there so might be a place to chat. Also can ask her if he takes your IC. I have tricare and they take that and not many people do. Quality of Life is also part of the Palms (where they are) team. Feel free to ask me any questions if you want. I know the whole team pretty good since having surgery there.

Rosie, here is another thought since you are in Florida.  Dr. Rhenke will be hosting a free BCIR seminar this coming Sunday, May 17 in the Orlando.  I attended the one in Chicago last summer as a BCIR “alumni” and found it to be very informative.  This would be a great opportunity to meet Dr. Rehnke and personally ask him any questions you might have.  Seminar information is available on www.bcir.org.
