Hey guys. Im really looking for some info and advice. Im 31 years old and Ive worked in a retail sales environment for over a decade now. Ive been on and off disability through work throughout that time due to my extreme flare ups with UC. The job is very demanding and extremely stressful. I just got back April 1st from being on long term disability amd already the job is taking a toll on me. Im now over a year with my surgeries and still have alot of issues with rectal pain and body pains and I feel like everyday the job is pulling me in the wrong direction with my health. Im really nervous I will end up sick again and I feel after a decade of busting my butt with this job and my health that it's no longer worth it to risk ny health again. I was wondering if anyone was forced to file for disability through the government and how hard it is to get approved. What options or benefits do I have to turn to because I have a family to support. How does this work? Thanks

I am not on disability, but have a few friends who are receiving benefits. It can be rather difficult to get the benefits. First of all, make sure you have a doctor who will support you. Then you will need a lawyer. Actually, it's best to hire one of those firms you see on TV. They specialize disability claims. It usually takes 2 or 3 attempts to win your claim. They don't get paid until you get paid. So, you have that in your favor. Try and find someone in your area who is getting benefits. They will give you more details on how to apply, etc. Good luck.
The key to getting Social Security Disability is a well written doctor’s report and supporting medical records. You will need to prove that your medical condition prevents you from performing any job for which you are qualified, not just your current job. I suggest that you get a book entitled, “Nolo’s Guide to Social Security Disability” through Amazon.com for authoritative information on this subject. Since SSA disability benefits are unlikely to cover all your family’s living costs (and more so if an attorney gets a share of it), I would look into getting a less stressful job that meets your physical limitations and family income needs. Perhaps your current employer has such a position.
