Hi, I'm about 2 years with J-Pouch now and still not really able to digest much in the way of uncooked fruits or veggies. Carrots, broccoli, celery, corn, etc., go through and come out only partially digested despite lots of chewing and small pieces. This has led to me eating more carbs than I'd like, and to some weight gain. Has anyone had any success dealing with this? Are there enzymes or other things that can be done short of cooking all veggies?

Any ideas appreciated, next stop is a nutritionist...

Over time I learn what uncooked veggies/fruits are the toughest for me to deal with. Taking metamucil/immodium with them can help things to stick togehter better to prevent leakages and soak up some of the more watery stool that can come along with those undigested pieces, as is eating my fruits/veggies in conjunction with other carbs/proteins, rather than just eating raw veggies alone.
My hospital dietician advise me that the veggies will come out looking quite recognizable as our small bowels do not break down the fibre. She suggested that the body is able to absorb the nutrients, just not the fibre. I had a delicious roasted vegetable salad last night and this morning can see green lettuce and red peppers. I am having no pain or difficulty emptying my pouch but am having to drink lots to keep me from getting the spins when I stand up.

I have the same issues. I'll tell you, my output is more formed when I'm not eating so many fruits and vegetables. I wish it would be formed all the time for lots of reasons. But I realize that when the fruits and veggies come out in a more watery mess, I am providing better nutrition for my body. Six of one, half a dozen of anotherSmiler
I tend to use a hand blender on raw or cooked veggies that give me a problem and my pouch loves anything that is blended or puréed...I even do it to leftover salads and make gaspacho out of it.
I pretty much live off of smoothies and pureed veggies in the summer.
In the winter I fall back into the old carb routine (comfort foods...argggh!) of whole grain pastas and parmesan cheese which seems to have a GPS coordinate direct to my hips...so I make soups whenever I can (love tomato or winter squash) and sprinkle my parmesan on top for the flavour but not the calories.

I'm in the same boat... my diet used to center around fruits and veggies but now they seem to be so much harder on my system. It seems like it's mostly due to the insoluble fiber? I just got a juicer and I'm wondering if I'm getting the same benefits from the fruits and veggies, just eliminating the fiber. Anybody know?
